Does anyone know if there are plans for a portable Reaper without installer? what I'm after is all the Reaper files in one zip/rar (like the portable versions of Audacity and Wavosaur) so you could simply unzip it onto any removable storage and use it straight out of the folder. I know you can install it to a removable drive and move some of the files to the Reaper folder to make it portable but it would be nice if we could just unzip it and use it. I know you'd lose the file associations but you lose those anyway when using Reaper portably on any PC except the original install PC.

The advantage would be that updating your portable Reaper would then simply be a case of unzipping the new version straight into the Reaper folder on my memory stick rather than installing the new version and then moving the files every time. ;)

D'oh! I meant to put this in the "Reaper General Discussion forum" rather than this one... If a mod could move it that would be fab. :)

I wonder how plugins react to being copied to and run from the usb drive?
Certain types of registration schemes must have a problem with being on another drive... When I try to associate reaper with plugin folders that are across a partition ones like Battery, waves stuff, and Addictive Drums all wont do it.

Also, I wonder how the stuff from
D:\Documents and Settings\X\Application Data\REAPER
Also the ColorThemes, Data, Effects, KeyMaps, and Plugin folders from the reaper Program Files directory get dealt with when run from a usb drive????

My guess is that it doesnt at all and would have to copied manually...

Anyone know?

Do these other apps that have portable versions have all the prefs and stuff saved along with the zip file???

Cool idea, but still pretty easy to do with reapers regular USB install prog and dragging some folders to the drive and onto the host computer...

The D:\Documents and Settings\X\App.... stuff is for multiple users.
Hardcore Reaperites move all that back in to the Reaper directory and Reaper uses that there instead so thats not a problem on a USB drive either.

Thanks maa

How do you tell Reaper to look for the files in the
ProgramFiles/reaper =instead of =
D:\Documents and Settings\X\App???

You don't need to - its an old Dos kind of standard....

Sorry for a million questions, but do you know where Reaper looks for the prefs first?
In the ProgFiles/Reaper dir or the D:\Documents and Settings\X\App...?
Meaning, if you run from a USB drive and reaper is already installed, will the memory stick reaper still look for the prefs in the docs and settings folder?

Thanks!!!

if a valid reaper.ini is found in the program dir then its used, otherwise it uses documents and settings etc..
