I made some awhile back...turned out really good IMO. Could I upload them to the stashbox.reaper thing?

Oooo!

Maybe I can use ReaVerb to replace the flaky SPX90 we've got in the rack...powers off spontaneously sometimes...whack it and it comes back on. :P

Ah - the SPX90.
I remember it well - is this a MkI or a MkII box?

... is this a MkI or a MkII box?

I worked for a Yamaha dealer during the 80s and 90s, and I remember that the difference between these two models was remarkable. Count me in either way though, I'd love to be able to use those impulses in my favorite convolution reverbs.

He'll post a link when he's uploaded it. If you'd like to check it out to upload and give people links to YOUR stuff, go to http://www.stashbox.org/

Also check out the 'shup' utility on that site...take a screenshot, have it automatically uploaded to stashbox or other site, the URL then will automatically be on the clipboard to paste into an email/forum message/IM client.

Good stuff.

I will get these uploaded tomorrow...been caught up with things. It is the spx90II version...a friend said is wasn't as noisy as the original....I promise I will get these up asap :)

here you go guys :) hope you like them...I done them up 8 seconds long...just for archival purposes(the noise floor is kind of high on those units IMO and they will trail off into noise). Enjoy and feel free to give them away to others. Maybe one of you can upload it to the stashbox reaper thing...couldn't get it to work for me. Jamie

How do I open this file? It's got a .7z extention to it. Many thanks

It is 7 zip file format.
I use WinRAR because I think it's easiest program to extract all kinds of archived files.

mine were the spx90II....are there other spx90 IRs floating around?
I figured I would "capture" my old hardware unit before it dies, that thing is very old :) I am glad you guys liked them, like I said some of the longer impulses will trail into noise but they are there if you need them. If one of you know how to upload to the reaper stashbox thing please upload the files I gave you to it...I couldn't figure it out. BTW the compression utility I used is freeware that is one of the reasons I picked it...so everyone could get a legit copy.

No problem for us Linux users. I retrieved p7zip from my distro's apps repo, and that was that.

And thank you very much for the IR files. :)

It is the spx90II version...a friend said is wasn't as noisy as the original....

The big thing was that the original model made certain unique sounds with regenerative feedback/overly longer decay times. I had one, and killed it doing that - the output section would fry.

I was quite disappointed on finding my new SPX90 II wouldn't let me make the sounds I could make with the original. Which made me go to a Quadraverb - which is another forgotten box that I think has some unique sounds. Particular the long decay times (again...) - for volume swells it had a particular sound; I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure a lot of Jeff Buckley guitar sounds relied on it...

/ anybody tired of their Quadraverb...?

Yeah, the Yamaha SPX90s had bad power supply boards. Mainly it would go bad due to heat over time. A studio I worked in had 3 of them all go bad over time. All 3 of them I trouble shooted down to the power supply board going bad. The SPX-900 we had lasted a lot longer, so I think Yamaha must have figured out their power supply was sh*t in the SPX-90's. What you're describing is the 1st symptoms of the power supply going bad. Expect it to die completely soon.

I always used the Yamaha FX's units because the user interface was nice and it was easy for me to adjust the parameters I needed quickly, as well as having a lot of decay time available...the sound quality was just alright though....nothing to get excited over though. Definitely better than something like an Art, but not quite as good as a Lexicon.

I'm interested. I have a dead one sitting around where I thought one of these days, I would just build a new power supply board to bring it back to life. Too much work, since if I remember right it has PLUS and MINUS 18 volt rails as well as 5 Volt rails for it's digital section components. This might save me a lot of time and effort of trying to bring one back to life. :)....but then again, I bought a Yamaha 03D mixing board....so I guess, I really had no use for it any longer since, the 03D has these built into it.

The SPX-90's are a standard FX's unit meaning it had a mono IN and Stereo Out. Thus, great for single instruments like Vocals, Guitars..etc. I also liked to use it for those echoing word effects for vocals, by adjusting the pre delay and feedback amount. It was rather simple to set up for this as well as a vocal doubler effect, I found it quite easy to set up with some adjustment.

The Presets where never that spectacular....so I was always adjusting the parameters...but I was always able to get what I wanted.....so I'm not sure how that will translate to an impulse file.

Thanks for the impulses. This made me thinking: I have a Kawai RV4 laying around (don't use outboard gear anymore) that has a nice sounding reverb. Never thought about making impulses from it. If anyone's interested I might dive into 'how to make impulses' ;)

Jamie, your SPX90 Early Reflection Impulses are still my "go-to" IRs for vocals that are too dead, but don't need reverb, rather subtle spacial enhancements. I find they work best in this situation when mixed in around 10-15dB under the dry signal in ReaVerb.

Thanks LOADS for making these IRs! I know I speak on behalf of many people here when I say that. :)

Bumpity Bump. I had a request via e-mail for these IRs this morning, so I figured I'd pump a little life into this thread again.

Here's the original link to the files, found earlier in this thread. The link is still active (as of 10-17-2008): http://www.mediafire.com/?oxgv0bniyyo

If you haven't gotten these yet, do it nooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! THEY'RE AWESOME!

I really appreciate these.

I'm wondering if anyone has (or could possibly create) an impulse of the 'Reverse Gate' preset (program 17) from the SPX90?

http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/pa/english/signal/SPX90E2.pdf

I'm experimenting with some Kevin Shields/MBV type sounds and from everything I've read the SPX90 is a key component and I'm unaware of any VST plugin with a similar algorithm.

There's no chorusing or anything like that. But there's one very definite effect that I do use, and
that's reverse reverb, mostly on a Yamaha SPX90. It inverts a normal reverb envelope without
making the notes backwards. There are certain settings I use that, along with the way I have the
tone of the guitar set up, create a totally melted sort of liquid sound. I don't use any of the
original, dry guitar signal; it's purely the reverb. When I use that sort of effect on guitar, that
means there's one guitar on the track.

It might be possible to simply reverse some impulse files for a reverse reverb, but I'm not sure how close that would be to how the SPX90's algorithm sounds.

this is a download of wav files that captured the spx90II, you can use them in reaverb or any convolution plugin. so its like a virtual spx90

So I just checked out these IRs and they sound really nice. Thanks for posting them. Does anyone have or would anyone be willing to make IRs of the Yamaha SPX 90 Pitch Change C or Symphonic patches (or any of the SPX Pitch Change patches for that matter) and post them here? I have been looking all over for these with no luck so far. Thanks in advance.
