I'm using Reaper version 2.108, so I'm a little behind. I've tried searching the forum for answers and haven't come up with anything like this problem:
I'm trying to record midi from a keyboard and playing back using the Creative General Midi Synth (Soundblaster Live 24 onboard). If I import a midi file, I can play back with any voice I want, however, if I'm recording, I cannot find where to change the midi program so that I can monitor using something other than piano. How does one do this?
I want to record midi and monitor using a general midi program. It defaults to piano and I can't find where to change it.
Thanks for the info....Mungoz

Okay, so my message was a little muddled.
Simplier.....;-)
I can find no way to change the Midi program of a Midi track before there is any midi in the track. After you have a track, you can change the program or voice. But with no notes or anything in the track, brand new, never been recorded in, how does one change the midi program from the default of piano?
Thanks...mungoz

I have no idea if that works for external GM devices too but at the end of this
http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16270
thread you find this JS GM program changer:

That file goes into reaper\effects\MIDI and should be available under JS:MIDI in the FX browser.

I think you'll find that the plugin is actually contained in the zip file mentioned in the first post on that thread.
Instructions on where to put it are in the post third down.
Thanks for pointing that out but I'm not sure if it does what the OP on this thread wants.

Ahhh. I've played with that plugin now.
What it does is allow you to change the sound of an existing Midi track as you play it. It does not 'inject' the change code into the midi file, so you can't save the midi file with that new change effected.
So it won't allow you to set up a midi 'voice' or 'patch' on an empty midi track.
At least I think that's what it does. I'll post this question on thet other thread.
Cheers.

The first post seemed to contain only the first version of the plugin. But it's the latest too (v5).

The OP wanted to send a Program Change command to an "external" GM MIDI device, he wants to select a string sound on it first before he records the strings. That works fine btw.
The plugin sends PC/BS messages to all devices listening to this data. Since there is no MIDI file yet, there's nothing to "inject" something into. If you want to include PC/BS into a MIDI file, you can do that using the Event Editor in the MIDI editor.

Okay, I've installed the midi program changer and it seems to do what I want except that now I seem to have a layering effect on monitor. I get the piano along with the selected program. It might be my routing, so I have to dig into it.

I guess the Microsoft software synth is enabled as well, causing the piano sound. Turn it off.
Go to 'Options'->'Preferences'->'Audio'/'MIDI Devices' and disable the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth".
If that doesn't do the trick, it might come from the Creative Synth itself - I don't know the SBLive 24 but it's probably still a "dual MIDI" device, having 2 synth engines with a MIDI input for each.
Click on the 'I/O' button of your MIDI-track. Check the "MIDI hardware output" for this channel. There you should have an opportunity to select only one of the Creative synth engines.
