View Full Version : It feels so big & hardly fits (..er, the item lock icon)
I wondered if anyone else shares my feeling that the lock icon is bigger than it needs to be.. considering the comparative subtlety of snap point, fades etc?
If it's just me then I'll shut up but thought I'd throw in this view before it hits release time.
If I have them "always on" it just means big padlocks everywhere - and on the shorter items that makes a big difference. If I have the icons off when not in use, then locked items would still stand out with a much smaller padlock icon - just because it's not there the rest of the time.
After a few days I thought I'd get used to it but really it still seems "heavy-looking" within the UI. After all you don't need it to catch your eye from a distance.. just see it when you're looking at it and the icon background already shows the setting quite adequately.
Just my view! ;)

I agree. Yesterday I tweaked around with the pngs to have them fit into the item even when minimized. I made them shorter in height and put them a pixel higher. That sort of worked, but I struggled with the item-FX icons when i made them have the same height. As a consequence they moved up closer to the middle lane of non-minimized items which looks even more distracting.
Have a look at the second picture of the opening post in the thread for my Reaper-theme reaGic551 at

Maybe it should not be a lock icon, but rather use a red dot for lock and green for unlock. my $.02.

I like the icon.
I just don't like this: http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php?p=198918
And it seems to break the "draw labels when items are in compact mode" option, see http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php?p=201140&postcount=23

Maybe it would be a good idea to allow the lock/unlock graphics to be part of a Color Theme? I like the idea of using a simple green or red dot to denote lock status on the items. This could take up much less space, especially when tracks are minimized.
I do hope this is user configurable.
I never use indiviual locks in any software so seeing them is also unnecessary for me.
Cheers

just disable the icon, if you don't like it ...

New pre1 build is up, classic/default theme buttons are smaller, and if you set the item_fx_* and item_lock_* button images you can change the size.. The default theme includes the big ones (tho we'll have WT make us smaller ones perhaps to make default)

Those of you with well calibrated monitors will be rushing to say "Ah! yes, kill the black border" but I would remind you that everything on the default has a fat black border for a good reason; these things need to be findable on the most abused of monitors (for now). But maybe not here ...discuss.

I like 1 and 3 and the "danish" design of them all :)

Number 3 would be my choice. Still readable and still being spotable.
Well now.. theming it (with variable size) seems totally the answer, so I really couldn't be happier with this resolution.
Thanks so much Cockos!
@Shredder/mikeroephonics: that's probably what I'll end up doing.. I really liked the idea of the colored dot but I appreciate that for new users it wouldn't be so intuitive.
@WhiteTie: Nice work as always, sir.. FWIW, IMO #3 already looks less oversized than #1, but I'm pretty sure #5 would still be clear enough without getting in the way. After all you only need to see that it's a padlock - the background color change makes the state clear. But hey I'm already happy so I'll leave you in peace. :D
Thanks for sorting this..... now, back to the innuendo.

Well, I ended up just resizing the icon (.png) down to 75% of the original and that seems to fit better. And made the lock red and left the unlock icon the default color..
Should be simple for you graphic folks out there.

Actually quite like #2, not that the black border bothers
How about colouring the button, so that the open pad lock is green locked padlock is red? Just to really really overstate the settings. That way on really zoomed out or long projects the red and green would probably still be visible, but zoomed in we would see a pretty padlock. Yeah I know, making work for the themers out there :D
Now if I would just get off my lazy arse and make a theme too, but no wait, that would mean spending less time with Olga, no way!
