Hi all,
The attached REAPER Project file provides an example of how to route the outputs of a VSTi that supports multiple outs.
This file uses the Drumatic v3 plug-in, from E-Phonic. The plug-in is available for download from the following URL:
http://www.e-phonic.com/plugins/
The Drumatic plug-in is loaded into the Track 1 FX chain, and the six available outputs have been routed to Tracks 2 through 7.
Click on the I/O button in Track 1 to view the Routing.
Click on the button marked "12 Outs" above the plug-in to view the routing from the VSTi.
I was going to make a Flash demo of this, but the I/O routing window doesn't fit in the screen area as it doesn't have scroll bars and I can't find a way to resize it.
I'll use this Project file as the basis for the updated VSTi information in the next version of the Manual.
Please post any comments or questions in this thread.
Cheers,
Malcolm.

Great post, Malcom! This is apparently a little confusing for some.
This should help greatly.

How can you use effects in track 1, i.e. for all drum tracks. It seems to me that an effect just works for for channel 1/2, the kick.
Also I can't use track 1 as a folder track. If I set it that way I don't get no drum sound, no matter what I try.
Are these bugs or am I doing something wrong?
I have the same problems with FL Studio not just with this demo project.

This sample Project wasn't really designed for use with Folder Tracks, but it can be done.
Insert a new Track above the existing Tracks and make the new Track into a Folder. All the Tracks underneath this Track will now be routed through that Folder Track. Any FX you insert in this Folder Track will be applied across all Tracks.

Malcolm.

I don't want to waste one track :)
So you can't use a vsti directly in a folder track?

Yes, you can, just not with the demo project attached to the first post in this thread, which is what I thought you were referring to.
To use a VSTi in a Folder, just add the VSTi to the Folder Track. The Tracks within that Folder will route their MIDI through the VSTi in the Folder Track.

Malcolm.

Seems like I just don't get it. But thanks for trying to explain :)
I don't see the difference between the sample project as it is now and if I make track 1 a folder track.

Attached is a revised version of the sample Project with the VSTi in a Folder Track. Have a look and let me know if you have any questions.

Unfortunately I still don't understand why you can't put the midi file in the folder track itself, why it has to be a track within the folder (sample project).
Or in my case, I have drums programmed in FL Studio and want to use them in Reaper via multi out VSTi, why I cannot load FL Studio in the FX chain of a folder track. Or rather why I don't hear the drums if I do so :)
Sorry for hijacking the tread :)

Well, you can if you want to. Just move the MIDI file into the Folder Track.
The whole purpose of a Folder Track is to route the Tracks within that Folder through one Master, so there's not much point placing a VSTi into a Folder Track unless you plan to use the Tracks within the Folder to route MIDI.

Ah, well that's another issue altogether. :)
You can load FL Studio Multi Out VSTi into a standard REAPER Track and route the multiple outputs to other Tracks. If you can upload an FL Project file with a sample of your normal drum setup I'll try to route it for you.

Malcolm.

Hi Malcolm,
I don't think there's something wrong with my routing. The attached project works fine, and if you create a folder track and put all drum tracks in it everything works as expected.
So there's not really a problem. I'm just curious why it doesn't work no more if you make track 1 a folder track.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for posting your Reaper Project File. Unfortunately it crashes REAPER on my machine every time I try to open it.
:(

Malcolm.

Hi Malcolm,
very strange.
Here's a picture of the routing (sorry for the poor quality). FL Studio is loaded in track 1. It works fine as shown in the picture but I'm still interested why it does work no more if I make track 1 a folder track :)
I should test this before opening my mouth, but what if you add two more channels to the "drums" track? Use channel 3 and up to send to individual tracks, then send them all back to channel 1/2 of the drums track.
Nope - there might be a bug. Or a feature.
Create track 1, give it 4 channels, and set up a stereo generator in an FX slot (I used TinyGod's Femme so I didn't have to play keyboard).
Create track 2, give it 2 channels and insert another tone source. Make it sound different from the first one.
At this point, the two faders should control the two sources. Pretty straight.
Set the track 1 generator to output on channel 3 & 4, post FX but prefader.
Create a third track, and set it to receive on channel 3&4, pre-FX. Insert an effect if you like.
At this point, the first slider should do nothing, track 2's fader controls track 2's generator and track 3 play track 1's generator through the FX.
Now go to track 3, disable "send to master/parent"
No sound, right?
Set track 3 to send to track 2, post-fader.
Now track 3's fader works again, but is sending its signal to track 2, post-fader.
What does this mean, anyway? What is different in sending it to a track post-fader and sending it straight to the summing amp? I presume it's routing, as something is different.
Because if you now switch track 3 so it sends to track 1, channels 1 & 2, instead of track 2, it doesn't work anymore. Even if you send it to track 1 post-fader, so there's no possiblity of a loop, apparently the routing is such that it gets cut off. Logically, channels 1 & 2 of track 1 should be free to recieve signals.
The "allow VST feedback" setting seems to have disappeared from Options. Possibly a connection? Is REAPER turning off this potential signal path?
This file uses the Drumatic v3 plug-in, from E-Phonic. The plug-in is available for download from the following URL:

In stalled Drumatic and it appears in my VST list, but when I open the project file, Reaper tells me that Drumatic is not available. Any ideas?

I also found this chapter in the REAPER manual really helpful : http://documentwrite.com/reaper/rewire.htm
check out the part : Routing AUDIO from the Slave application to REAPER.
This is how to route multiple channels in rewire, but the same rules apply more or less to vsti´s as far as I can see.

You might have downloaded the wrong version of Drumatic (there are several available on that site). The sample Project file is designed to work with v3, but the routing should remain intact even if you've got the wrong version of Drumatic.
Cheers,
Malcolm.
