I want to have several VSTi tracks input enabled without them being recorded. Possible?

You can do this by rightclicking the input icon and selecting the appropriate input, but not arming your tracks. Or isn't that what you want?

Yep, you need to set the tracks to record:disable by r-clicking the record arm button.

example scenario...

I have a few MIDI controllers, each sending to a different VSTi. I want them to be all playable at all times so that I can compose/experiment/fool around. But I find that I need to have the tracks armed for recording if I want them to produce any sound. And then, I cannot record a specific track because all armed tracks get recorded.

Am I am missing something obvious?

If not I am going to make a few FRs...

1) Allow MIDI input monitoring without arming the track
2) (optionally) auto-discard recorded parts where nothing has been recorded

I was puzzled by that one too at first... It sounds weird, but Billoons answer was right on the spot. You have to enable monitoring and rightclick the record button to set recording mode to 'record: disabled'.

This sounds like a contradiction, arming a track to not record, but as soon as you stop wondering and just deal with it, it does exactly what you want: Track is armed and can be fooled around on, but it is not recording.

I made me some custom actions to set tracks up quick and easy for this job.

I like your FR #2, btw. if this is not implemented yet.

Thank you, I didn't realize what Billoon was suggesting. I saw the option just now it seems to do exactly what I want, thanks!

regaring FR (2), Reaper hasn't nagged me so far about my empty recordings, be it audio or MIDI.
