Well Jeroen Breebaart did it again. He added the excellent Omniverb plugin to his impressive free collection:
http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/audio_vst.htm
Omniverb is a reverberation plugin with separate control of the reverberation time, echo density, room size, and early reflections. It can also be used as a gated reverb.
The incredibly low CPU usage is amazing for this kind of plug. And the sound is great.

Audio designer/engineer Jez Wells published some interesting free FX: http://www.jezwells.org/
One of them is Shapee, a sound morpher. Shapee let's you combine the sound of the two wave files, say the pitch of wave A with the formant of wave B. It creates a mono output from a seperated left (wave A) and right (wave B) stereo input.
In REAPER it's easy to set up a small track template for shapee.
Track 1: wave A (& StereoTools FX, select mute left or right)
Track 2: wave B (& StereoTools FX, select mute right or left)
Track 3 (SOLO): Shapee FX (routing: receive from track 1 and 2)
StereoTools (a useful VST on its own): http://www.kellyindustries.com/stereo_tools.html

At a quick listen this plugin seems to actually sound pretty good:
Dream Vortex Leveling Amp
http://www.dreamvortexstudio.co.uk/8103/
the reason I say "actually sound pretty good" is just that I have tried a few plugins that try to do LA2ish compression with few that are satisfying. This one SEEMS to work pretty well... what do you guys think?
-Edit- Used it some more... It can kinda get sort of pumpy faster than say the UA LA2A, but for milder settings i still like the sound.

I just tried out the (in)famous Modern Plugins by Antress for the first time. He's a guy from Taiwan, and 'Made in Taiwan' will pretty much tell you that the thing is a cheap copy of a western product... so are some of Antress GUI's. And while in some heated discussions at KVR some guys tried to make fun of these plugins by saying that their actual sound is a parody of the originals, I think these plugins are sounding pretty if not totally amazing for free stuff...
It wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that Antress actually used the coding of rather expensive stuff to create his 'own' plugins... I might be wrong, but for the moment I'd say that these plugins are among THE Must Have 'Good Free Effects' out there...
Use a good EQ to treat some high frequencies hisses that might occur...

No doubt mentioned before here, and AFAIK loathed by our good man jens, but hey! what a compressors and sounds (and no, I'm not deafened by those GUI's :) )

Shhhh... don't give out the secret ;)
Yes, these Antress plugins have lots of character (the compressors, the levelers, actually there is no bad plugin in the bundle - even though they are sometimes far from the "emulated" model). For non-critical tracks they may be just the magic ingredient. And let people talk :).
And wouldn't we all love a ReaComp with an Antress GUI (or better, made by White Tie)? 8).

alex,
thanks for the tip!
i like'em.
i just quckly tryied Antress' plugins, i think my fav. is the Fairchild. (i've only run thru the vintage series.)
but the 1176 is not doing its job, imo. nor has a character.

The Fairchild (very good!), the VP-ME (for aggressive, dance-oriented sound), the Manley (a "one trick pony"), the analoger, and the modern plugins (these compressors sound very good!).
1176 and LA2A are much different from the hardware and their saturation is less than stellar. I like the 1176 on some tracks, even though it's not UAD or Bomb Factory at all :).
Btw the Leveling Amplifier by Martin Best rox ! It's fast, quite transparent, clean and very musical. And looks great !

Dave Haupt IS famous, sink. :)
Something else. Brian Eno assisted Bowie in writing songs for Lodger by arbitrarily selecting chords written on some school board. The band would simply follow the schoolmaster. :) With some striking results, such as 'Repetition'.
Here's a nicely made plugin for song writing experiments in that same fashion:

That's funny, cuz that's exactly how I felt about them when I tried them (granted it was some time ago, I see they've been updated more than once since then).
At the time, I felt like many people were "listening with their eyes", because their sounds did not impress me at all, yet they were being raved about on numerous forums.

ah ! C Kleine, from Hermann & Kleine (Morr music). He nows works for Ableton.
I have some EP he released some years ago, i like it.
Pluggo is a bit like a plugin format (in fact it is a tool for creating plugins, which needs pluggo runtime engine to run, a bit like Reaktor).
There are many nice free pluggo plugins (but you need to install the pluggo runtime engine first).
But these ones are for mac only ("Here are some Plug-ins for your own convenience all for OS X (UB) and Pluggo. ").
But here you'll find several free pluggo plugins, and by googling around, you'll find dozens of them ;)

Some of my favourites (might have already been mentioned)...
VOXENGO BOOGEX
Great guitar amp sim. Supports external impulse files for the cab emulation. 64bit processing! (Amplitube is only 32bit).
http://www.voxengo.com
VOXENGO SPAN
Spectrum analyser. Indespensible tool for mastering.
http://www.voxengo.com
VOXENGO TUBE AMP
Does exactly what it says on the tin... and does it *well*. There's a lot of very expensive plugins that do nothing more than what this does and a lot of them aren't even as good.
http://www.voxengo.com
VOXENGO STEREO TOUCH
Widens mono tracks into psuedo stereo. Got a mono synth sound you want to widen? Like all Voxengo plugs it's 64bit.
http://www.voxengo.com
VOXENGO OLD SKOOL VERB
Reverb... "old skool" style. Nothing terribly special, but it does sound great on lead guitars, rock vocals, etc.
http://www.voxengo.com
KJAERHUS CLASSIC SERIES
Shame they're only 32bit. Be warned, these could potentially make Reaper's 64bit processing fruitless. But they're cool. The reverb sounds great. I wouldn't recommend the "Master Limiter" for mastering, but it's quite useful for tracks. Just remember it's 32bit and will say goodbye to your 64bit processing up to that point.
http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php
SILVERSPIKE RUBY TUBE
Another pretty good tube driver. Like the limiter option, it makes it like a good saturator (a little bit like a Fairchild 670 or the LA-2A). It's 32bit, so it'll render Reaper's 64bit processing pointless. But it's still cool.
http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:RubyTube
SILVERSPIKE ROOM MACHINE 844
Room modeler. Not a reverb, it gives great reflections minus the tails. A little "dead" by reverb standards, and not great for drums since you get strage copies of the hats appearing, but good for vocals. Again, it's 32bit, so use it wisely. Put it on a send bus. That way, your original vocal track (or whatever) remains 64bit.
http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:RoomMachine_844
DAKRWARE FX AND SYNTHS
Darkware. Where to begin? I can sum up Jack Dark's Darkware effects and synths as... crazy freakin' hentai-skinned barbaric dementia. :) Great for when you want to make people feel ill. Don't get me wrong; they have their uses. I love Syntendo. If you don't like cartoon nudity, you won't like some of the GUIs. And if you don't like frank colloquial expletives, better not look at Jack Dark's site at all. Or grow up, get a sense of humour, then look at it :)
http://www.jackdark.net/darkware.html
Just a few of the free plugs I like to use sometimes. I use Voxengo plugins (free and commercial) a lot. I absolutely swear by Voxengo plugs! Awesome through-and-through.
So many plugins do what they say on the tin and nothing more. Voxengo plugs have what you could call "character". It's like having a rack of vintage analogue gear. You could try three examples of the exact same analogue compressor and get slightly different characters -- same with guitar amps and anything that involves a tube/valve. Most Voxengo plugs have a selection of tube processing modes to choose from to get different characters. That's why I love Voxengo plugs.
Just a little rant about Voxengo. Try them! They're worth the money. :) Even the free ones are an insult to be free.

Just remember it's 32bit and will say goodbye to your 64bit processing up to that point. If the point of 64 bits (or even 32) is to give you huge amounts of headroom during processing, and the point of a hard limiter is to chop everything above full scale off, then does it matter that you've lost the difference between 64 bit and 32 bit, when by definition you won't be using that headroom anyway after the limiter?

My problem is that Reaper crashes with nearly the half of the plugins i use. all freeware. that sucks.

If the point of 64 bits (or even 32) is to give you huge amounts of headroom during processing,...
For me, headroom isnt the issue as i keep everything below 0db as a habit...the advantage is the extra precision that 64bit gives, which gets lost when you introduce a 32bit plugin into the signal path.
Billoon
11-26-2007, 10:43 AM
Like all Voxengo plugs it's 64bit.
Just to clarify this...they use 64bit internal processing but only 32bit i/o. So you still lose the 64bit signal using these plugs, if thats of any concern to you.

Hi ... Bitter displays the information value in bits. If the signal is 24 bit integer, the lowest bar will be 24, if the signal is 32 bit float, the lowest bar will be 32, etc. So yes, it does tell you if a plugin is converting your 64-bit float signal into 32-bit float.

Woah, nice! So how does it do it? I mean I know it can be done somehow, but if I think about it it would be a hell of complicated, so there is a easy solution to it? Haha, anyway, really nice.
So but this means it would display 32 bit float the same way as 32 bit int, right? Would be nice to have a indicator for wether it is float or int.

Reaper handles everything internally at 64 bits, but if an input signal (from say a 24-bit A/D converter, or from a 32-bit VST) contains fewer than 64 bits of information, it will still show up in Bitter as a 24 or 32 bit signal, until meaningful processing is done by Reaper (by say moving a fader, or inserting a ReaPlug). Bitter shows the information value in bits, not the file or signal depth in bits.
Not to get too OT though, we could talk about it more over in this thread (http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14891) if anyone is overcome by morbid curiosity.

Hi, this reply is mainly to pattonfreak1 for the link to 'dirthead' . I've been keeping my eye on this thread for a while now and as a professional gtr amp sim user (gtr tutor) I've had massive use of tubebaby, but gave up on him (nikko) doing an update as I checked his site for over a year for nothing. If 'dirthead' really does blow tubebaby away then it should be good to see. BTW re bitter I noticed that with 24 bit integer there is a full width base line, wheareas with 32 and 64 float signals there is that pointy egg? shaped metering?? Anyhow an essential free plug for sure.
While I'm here I'll share my 2-3 year amp sim experience. Started with Cakewalk FX amp sim, (DX, rendered in cooledit 1.2 - no realtime driver). Progressed to realtime in logic, discovering tubebaby, which is highly recomended for newbie use. Aquiring more CPU power I was able to get good use out of Voxengo boogex. Boogex deserves special mention as it can import high quality impulses, not limited to amp cabinet, so it even can be used like SIR, with the advantage of latency compensation which SIR couldn't manage.
A great free substitute for a full featured amp sim + stomp box rig is freeamp2. If you have plenty of CPU it is a great interface and cool sounds. (I have some crackle problems when running 2 instances during lessons in REAPER on celeron 1.8 with 760 Mb ram)
I found the Juicy 77 recco in this thread and now use and recommend it myself (I like to start my braver students off with REAPER and boogex + freeamp2 as soon as they get their first ASIO driven audio interface)
While on free vs pay I think sims like boogex and juicy 77 blow away the payones I have seen. Even splitting your mono gtr wav with Kjaerhus Classic Chorus and bi-amping using two instances of tubebaby can get some fat results.
I messed about with demo of DX 'revalver' :(
Stick with free VST

"Prodyspace is a new kind of 4d-Panner which has been designed to put Instruments within a mix to the front or to the back. To achieve this effect, the Prodyspace uses delay-modulation (kind of spatial processing), intelligent filtering and very short reverberation
Not only you can place sounds in the left or right within a mix, now it΄s even possible to place them in the front or back of a mix. This allows easy working with all types of sound sources. The Prodyspace has been designed to make it easier working with instruments that are different to mix. Now, mixing Instruments is a breeze!"
Works very well, imo, for room simulation. Left in the back of the room there's your bassist freaking, far to his right the drummer is going nuts, the guitarist is moving to the front playing slide with a bottle of Smirnoff and to his left the singer is shouting to shut the fuck up -
http://www.prodyon.de/prodyspace.htm
... but it will also bring a string quartet to life :)
The Prodyspace download is gone???? It took some searching but here is a new download link. http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/8/31/195824/prodyspace.rar

Tobias Fleischer, responsible for some of the sickest sounding VSTi's ever created also has made some amazingly useful stuff, I found this ages ago and I haven't really tested them yet in REAPER.
quote from his site
"DMOBag contains VST wrapper plugins for all
so-called DMOs (DirectX Media Objects) included
with DirectX9. You only need to have DX9 installed,
then you get two cool reverbs (one from Waves!),
chorus, flanger, gargle, EQ, distortion, compressor
and echo, all for free..."
http://www.tobybear.de/p_sourcebag.html
I have tried them as multi-channel and they do work. My favorite is the DMO I3DL2 Reverb.dll just copy it and rename it to DMO I3DL2 Reverb-Stereo.dll and it becomes stereo. Amazing.

VisualVox VST(like autotune or v-vocal)
http://static.kvraudio.com/i/b/visualvox.gif
VisualVox VST is an intonation correction plugin.
With it you can:
* Shift notes of a voice recording to perfect intonation.
* Fit a voice recording into rhythm by stretching, cutting and moving parts of it.
* Fit a voice recording to another key with minimal pitch changes.
* Produce a perfect vibrato.
* Visualize how right or wrong you can sing.
* Create artificial polyphony from single voice recording.
* Design frequency curves freely with your mouse.
* Let the plugin improve intonation automatically.

Holy crap, this thread freaking rules. I can't believe how much great stuff I've gotten out of here.
Looks like I missed the boat on the Antress stuff though. Each link I've followed in this thread redirects to the SSL website.
Oh well. Tons of great stuff for me to go play with. Actually, I think it'll take me quite some time to see which ones I like best. I've got like ten limiters, four compressors, ten EQs, three choruses, three delays, and about fifty reverb impulses to go try out. And that's not counting any of the included ReaFX, the Kjaerhus stuff, the Yohng limiter, or the SIR1011 reverb, all of which I already had.
Yikes. Brain fried. How can there be so much great free stuff out there? Why on earth do people still buy plugins with all this stuff floating around?

Any orchestral composing type Reaper users tried the Synful Orchestra free 15 day demo? It's unclear on the site whether you can re-install the demo after the 15 days expires, but they say it allows installation if you have already installed previous demos. It sounds interesting - MP3 demos on the site seem remarkable considering this is not a sampled library, but a synthesiser that produces pretty realistic sounds and articulations from playing styles. Probably an orchestral purist would diss it, but to these untrained orchestral ears it sounds convincing enough for a lot of purposes. It's about £245uk to purchase, but I guess if you can produce something in 15 days or less, it qualifies for this thread on free plugins (check if the demo license covers commercial use if needed, of course). It's at http://www.synful.com/ Cheers

Just 2 suggestions:
- on the "light" side, you can try Prova http://smatni.tripod.com/safwanmatnivstplugins/
- on the (very) heavy side, try the SynthFont VSTi (http://www.synthfont.com/) with the Maestro Concert Grand sample bank (available here: http://lesitedeburnie.free.fr/matshelgesson-maestro-en.html).
From the site: "So, the Maestro Concert Grand v2 is a big giga bank using 792 stereo samples of a concert piano, a Yamaha CF3, recorded with two Neumann KM84 microphones, disposed in X/Y, with 5 velocity layers, and weighs 932 MB ! The piano alone, without release samples, weighs 887 Mb and 440 samples. The release samples are 352 and weigh 45 MB. You can play with or without them."
You need SynthFont to play these samples (.gig format). It takes a few hours to download the library...
Using SynthFont (the VSTi version) in Reaper is not straightforward, because Reaper crashes when you close the VST window (if you have made any modifications to it - at least, this is what happens to me - and I don't know if the crash is a Reaper or a SynthFont problem). So, follow these steps:
- create a track
- save your project (remember, Reaper will crash...)
- open the effects window, choose synthfont
- select the sound bank
- close the effect window -> Reaper crashes...
- reopen your project, reopen the effects window, re-select SynthFont
- You're done ! If you open Synthfont, you'll see that the bank is still here. If you don't do any other modification, you can close the window, and Reaper won't crash this time.
Warning: SyntFont doesn't use disk streaming, which means that the entire sample set is loaded in memory. On an empty project, with just SynthFont and the sound bank, Reaper takes about 1Gb RAM. It is the price to pay for a really good free piano... This also means that Reaper will take some time to start.
Enjoy !

Just a few weeks ago I sold my ESQ1 synth (among other things) as I'm moving into virtual synths completely now. I have many great VSTi synths that can fill the gap (Albino, Pro53, Tera, just to name a few). However, I stumbled upon a free VSTi emulation of the SQ80/ESQ1 and it sounds very close to the real deal. So I'm very happy to have this one as well ;)
http://itec.uka.de/~buchty/sq80/sq8l/SQ8L-v0.9b.jpg
The only real limitation is that it's 'only' eight voice polyphonic, but hey my ESQ1 was also eight voice poly.
For those that don't know the Ensoniq synths: they combine digital wavetable oscillators with analog filters. The result is a very versatile instrument that can do bright digital sounds close to DX7 and PPG stuff, as well as fat warm analog things (the ESQ1 bass sounds are earth-moving).
So if you are looking for a very versatile 'bread and butter' synth, or just a great sounding one to complement others, grab this one (before it dissapears, you never know).
It's here: http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/

showed up only once in this entire thread (and only as a brief mention). Is this because everyone has tried them and found them less than interesting? Or, is it because most haven't yet run them through their paces? I'd be interested in hearing additional feedback on these 64-bit plugs, if there's any to be given.

bump - hard to believe these have escaped scrutiny.
I've made a search and I've not found these guys in the forum.
I've not tried them but look great. There is even a VST-Matlab connection!:

Hey do these sound any better?
I tried them long ago and thought they look great and a few sounded okay. But I didn't think they were up there with UA or Waves or even the free plugs in Reaper.
But have you tried these newer ones? does it seem like they are less buggy or are they still spending more time on the looks?

I'm picky when it comes to plugins. I want it to have quality sound of course, but also a nice UI and something new to offer that similar plugins don't have or don't implement well. These are two very new compressor plugins that I found quite amazing:
new compressor from melda production:
http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstplugins/mcompressor.php
audio damage's "rough rider":
http://www.audiodamage.com/downloads/product.php?pid=ADF002
and be on the lookout for bootys epicverb plugin (reverb) I'm beta testing it at the moment and it is wonderful:

EXCELLENT collection of midi controlling vsts
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=192282
direct download link => http://thepiz.org/xt/pizmidi20080203.zip
highly recommended, i put a couple of the particularly essential ones by default on all my midi tracks. i intend to make a panel w/ designated buttons to enable/bypass them at whim.
Consider this is a bump. I was wanting to do this - 'midiInvertNotes - "Mirrors" notes centered around the selected note' in the midi editor and since then I've been using this collection more than the JS midi plugs, except the excellent 'midi humanize' which is much better than the new midi editor humanise action.
the full listing of plugs is as follows:
midi16CCRouter - Changes up to 16 CCs to 16 other CCs
midi2qwerty16 - Use midi to trigger fake keystrokes to the focused window (Windows/Linux only)
midiAudioToCC - Converts audio amplitude to CC messages
midiConverter2 - Change and convert between CC, Channel Pressure, Poly Aftertouch, Program Change, Pitch Bend, NRPN/RPN, and Note On/Off messages in various ways
midiChannelize - Transforms everything to the selected channel
midiChs_noGUI - Channel filter/changer like energyXT1.x "MIDI chs" component
midiForceToKey - Enforces a scale, and transposes within the scale (optionally based on midi notes on a selected channel)
midiForceToRange - Transposes by octave into the selected range
midiInvertNotes - "Mirrors" notes centered around the selected note
midiNotchFilter - Isolate, remove, or channelize specific midi messages
midiNotesToCC - Converts note number and velocity to CC messages
midiNoteToggle - Notes (optionally within a selected range and/or channel) are toggled: play a note once to turn it on, play it again to turn it off.
midiNRPNConverter - Converts between NRPN/RPN and CC messages, with 16 conversion slots
midiSimpleLFO - One CC LFO with some "simple" options
midiSostenuto - Like a piano sostenuto pedal, but for midi notes instead of piano dampers
midiVelocityScaler - Scale/reverse/offset velocity of input notes
Insert Piz Here has done some great work with these

I need a good free VST drum plugin.
Apologies if there is already one posted but I've looked and can't find.
When I say good, what I mean is powerful, not the weak sounding 'psst' type snares that I've found so far.
The MS GS wavetable synth has a goodish drum kit but the latency makes it unusable, any ideas?
Bebop52
11-13-2008, 06:59 AM
Loads of very good powerful free drums out there which blow away MS wavetable. Try the free Kore Player, the Mydrumset kits, and the excellent Addictive Drums free demo. Plus use SFZ soundfont player and download hundreds of free soundfont drum kits of every variety from dozens of sites on the net. THe latency on wavetable is because it is not driven by ASIO, it is not a VSTi, which all these other free instruments are. Cheers.

This completely missed my notice, I was looking for something I could use for my new Trigger Finger on my Mac - it's ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
I can't think of words that emphasize enough how good this is. It's about 2.5GB of downloading and worth every byte.

Well, I didnt see them on this list (shame) so here are direct links and descriptions to Bootsy's FREEware... I emphasize free because this guy could sell this stuff and make a fucking fortune. In other words for freeware, this stuff is really, REALLY good.
P.S.: The gui's are stunning:
(click the name for the link)
BootEQ (http://bootsy.cr68.com/plug/BootEQ_1.0.rar)- a musical sounding mixing EQ.
at a glance:
- four independent bands plus additional highpass filter
- special selected and musical sounding EQ curves and phase responses
- capable of reproducing several 'classic' curves
- well adjusted auto Q and versatile overlapping frequency ranges
- minimized curve warping at Nyquist frequency
- stepless selectable frequencies in low mid and high mid band
- adjustable HF shape
- level metering and output volume trim
Density (http://bootsy.cr68.com/plug/Density_1.0.rar)- smooth and versatile dynamics processing.
• smooth and versatile stereo dynamics processing
• flexible audio encoding and routing
• designed for glueing all things together
• few controls, flexible work
features:
• zero latency processing
• natural, smooth and unobtrusive coherent compression
• modelled transformer circuit
• modern and program dependend release curve
• seemless MS compression and blending
• phase consistent internal mixing
• special 'phat' mode for reduced compression artifacts
• sidechain filtering
• completely SSE optimized
TesslaSE (http://bootsy.cr68.com/plug/TesslaSE_1.1.rar)- modelling pleasant sounding 'electric effects' coming from transformer coupled tube circuits in a digital controlled fashion.
at a glance:
• transformer style signal saturation
• smooth transient polishing and increased RMS leveling
• subtle analog style signal colouration
• switchable sub bass enhancements
features:
• zero latency processing, low CPU usage
• harmonic enhancements without artefacts (aliasing)
• dynamic noise model
• proprietary signal processing and modelling algorithms implemented
• performance crucial parts are written in assembler, completely SSE optimized
Rescue (http://bootsy.cr68.com/plug/Rescue_Release_1.1.rar)-Rescue features decent gain and transient mechanics applied straight forward to m/s encoding. Some decent non-linear signal couloration is given as well.
For further features and overall handling please check the manual. Use the presets for inspiration but don't take them to serious - u will have to tweak your own like with EQ or Comp.
i just took booteq and density for a spin on the bus and i like em there a whole lot. now if only i knew what i was doing in the first place.

I apologize to post this question in this thread, but I tried asking this elsewhere and got zero response. I am curious about this stereo to multi-channel plugin. How do you folks use this in Reaper, since Reaper can't export to multi-channel. How are you using this plugin?

Joystick Control:
http://vinuesa.club.fr/projet-flou/english/joystickctrl.htm
MIJOY equivalent, with more options and freeware. Let you use your joystick (buttons and axis) to control a lot of things. You can use the axis as a volume/wah pedal, buttons to trigger recordings or bypassing effects, etc. A bit ugly, but does the job very well. You can still use Joystick MIDI feature of Reaper when using this plugin.

Since I found this excellent free tuner VST I have stopped using the JS tuner that I was using before.
http://www.dontcrack.com/freeware/downloads.php/id/2203/software/Tune-It/
It's a virtual chromatic tuner with adjustable precision (inverse to CPU use) and pitch.
It's the only one you'll need in Reaper

I used this one a few years ago, but it was an expiring demo, and I just had too many good free ones to need to buy it.
Patrick Wurr has now released it for free, and it's probably now in the top 5 of free ampsims, IMHO. (with simulanalog Gsuite, Juicy77, Nick Crows and Your Favorite Free Ampim)
