Are non-publicly available downloads actually working?

When uploading a publicly available file,everything is OK.The link shows up in a box after the upload is done.But if I untick the box and upload a file,after the upload is finished,I get no link at all,it just returns me to the main page where the publicly available downloads are displayed.
Is this "private" mode really working or not?
It worked perfectly at the old Stashbox page,BTW.
