What the hell are they and why is everyone going nuts about them?

A lane allows you to record multiple takes to the same track and then view all the takes side by side and edit them quickly. For instance, this weekend I was doing a vocal session. The singer laid down her few takes, I expanded the lanes, sliced here and there, and I have a comp track done in a few minutes. Ctl-L expands the lanes.

to add to babbagump's concise explanation:

once you split the take in to the phrases, or bars (or however you decide to split them) you make a take/segment active by clicking on it. You end up with a visual path of highlighted takes and that is your comp'ed part:

~~ ~~ ~~ ~~

but of course you can do this "perfect take" thing without using those lanes. (Split the multitake record at the mistakes, press T/Shift+T on the desired segments to search for the better ones, and crossfade them togther.)

it's about different workflows, i think. Reaper keeps everybody happy. :)

Right, lanes is the exact same thing as the Ctl-T deal except it gives you a visual way to see what you are doing.

Ah right. Cool. Thanks everyone. I've been using Ctrl T and have been fairly happy with that... but this sounds like a potentially less confusing way, perhaps. Maybe more confusing. Who knows. Nice to have the choice, though, eh?

yeah really nice especially with loads of vocal takes, and quickly comparing #4 to #9 back-and-forth, for example... can't really do that with "T/Ctrl T"

just got around to trying lanes. looks very useful but one question. when recording takes of different lengths, at the same point of a song, why does reaper split up the pieces of the longer takes from the lanes? for example, i tracked 3 guitar takes. one take is 10 seconds long, another 12 seconds, and another at 8 seconds. i have 3 lanes for each take but the last 2 seconds of the 10 second take and the last 4 seconds of the 12 second take have 2 lanes of their own. what gives and can i change it? i just want 3 lanes without a bunch of fragments all over the place.

If you search the forum, you will find much talk of this, the potential fix and workarounds. as of now it remains a nit-picky quirk. I always end the record after the first beat of the take following the last one I want. then, i kill the last take...

Searched but couldn't find an answer about my question on lanes.

In Reaper, when you record audio, you can record multiple takes, I'm as far as that.

But when you program midi (in the editor), how can you then create multiple lanes in one take? When I right-click the midi-item, the option 'new take' in the submenu is greyed out.

Any ideas?

Any info appreciated
