Hello,
i would like to mention possible alternative approach to classic VCA/DCA tracks functionality, which seems to be discussed across several threads and apparently quite a few user will appreciate it.
Typical approach (close to consoles or ProTools HD implementation) is described in detail at Airon's FR:
http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=2817
I actually thought about workflow and what is usually done during mixes, and how it could be married with folder tracks - feature not available at consoles nor PTHD.
So my proposed approach won't be necessarily VCA (eg. combination of volume from track fader with master VCA fader), but rather feature expansion of existing folder tracks.
Idea is actually quite simple.
If any child track contains post fader send, which is routed outside of parent folder, multiply this send level by volume level of parent folder. That's it.
Make that behavior switchable somewhere in folder track context menu (item like "Vol. level affects children's sends") and checkbox in Track/Send Defaults in Preferences.
What will be real-world benefit of feature?
- sends to tracks with one common effect in project (typically some reverb), which is outside of particular folder track, will be affected by folder volume fader, similarly like in case of VCA master. This is actually one of main thing, why VCAs are so discussed and IMO also very natural behavior for someone, who never heard of any VCAs as dry/wet ratio of this effect will be preserved with folder volume change.
Sends to tracks (for instance some parallel processing), which are placed at same folder level as source track, won't be affected, because its signal is going through folder track anyway, so output level is natuarlly affected by track folder volume.
- when master/parent send will be disabled for all tracks within folder. Outputs from these tracks can be freely routed to other "buses" or hardware via post-fader sends and still affected also by parent folder track volume (and its automation). That way, folder track becomes only volume controller.
- implementation could be arguably easier, than full blown VCA implementation with new assignment dialogs, another track grouping scheme and so on.. So we could expect that with next Reaper update.. sorry, just kidding ;)
Thank you!
Michal
