play not working until I force focus by tring to close the window

unable to play unless close button has been pressed

when I first start reaper or move to another program the only way I can get the transport (play) controls to work is to try closing the main window and then selecting cancel on the save dialogue then everything springs back into life, I'm using Windows XP with a Yamaha SW1000XG soundcard.
