UI suggestions for Simpler Reaper Usage (v4)
A series of comprehensive suggestions for improving basic Reaper UI

As mentioned by many others, the UI could be improved easily.
Here I will list some of the ways it could be improved.

1. Different context menu for arrange pane and marker/timeline pane:
currently they're the same, it'd make more sense to put the marker/timeline functionality into right-clicking the marker/timeline area, and the rest into the arrange area.

2. Three default levels of functionality for reaper:
as mentioned by others, when you first install reaper it would be handy to select a 'Simple, 'Medium' or 'Advanced'(the current level) level of interaction - in terms of options available on menus and perhaps other visible aspects of the interface. Currently the default interface is a nightmare for newbies.

3. Mixer-interface too right-click context-sensitive
currently you have to do some heavily-archaic stuff to get certain things set up right. Clicking on different parts of the mixer yields vastly different menus, and it's pretty difficult to spot some options.

4. All options should be available under project settings (for per-project prefs) or preferences (for global prefs):
for example, 'show sends' visibility in the mixer appears to be only available by clicking a certain place in the master mixer area. Should be in project settings, at least, with a global default being available under preferences, preferably.

5. Mixer plugin area not context-sensitive enough:
if no plugin is present, the only option should be adding a new plugin or fx chain. Pref would be to be able to customise this to simply show vst folders on right-click (if wanted). The greyed out options only add visual noise.

6. Options to turn off the 'recently installed' and 'new' plugin lists would be appropriate.

7. Object-oriented plugin approach ala tracktion in mixer view:
Why can't I treat plugins in the mixer view as objects and just select them by clicking on them and hit del, or ctrl-c or ctrl-v like normal objects? If I have several plugins selected, it would make sense to be able to drag all of them to another track, not just one. Etc.
Current methodology looks at them as options in permanent slots, and I know, from experience, that this isn't the easiest way to deal with them.

8. Make inline midi editing defaultable, auto-height:
Have an option for inline editing to be the default when double-clicking a midi item- and _more importantly_, auto-resize the track in question so that the midi is actually editable inline-
switch it back to the original height on second double-click.

9. Reduce duplicate functionality, have one or at most two ways to do something rather than several:
example: env button in track view where it's actually used, not in mixer view where it isn't.

10. Option to show either minute/seconds time, or bar/beat, or both, in timeline:
currently shows both, usually working in one or other, having both there makes it more difficult to read.
Also change bar/beat formatting to 2|1|000 rather than 2.1.000 (looks similar to minutes/seconds formatting currently)

11. Take a look at what tracktion does with timelining:
ie. reveals only the necessary amount of textual information based on zoom level. Hell, just look at tracktion's interface overall for good information-hiding practice.

Too many different elements lumped in together to vote yes or no. Maybe just start a discussion thread based on all this and see what surfaces as the popular bits before doing a FR?
