Configurable, horizontal grid lines

Optional, horizontal grid lines in both the arrange view and MIDI editor would be extremely useful for me.

Their appearance should be configurable, e.g.:

- weight (in px?)
- themed? yes/no
- if yes:
image (probably 1px width, repeated; any px height, cropped)
- if no:
configurable colour/blend, etc.

Whatever is friendliest for the system resources.

Thanks.

Their appearance should be configurable, e.g.:

- weight (in px?) Pixel from 2, 4, or 6px (must be even to allow later question)
- themed? yes/no Yes
- if yes:
image (probably 1px width, repeated; any px height, cropped) Probably by colors only (2 different colors, to allow for a somewhat 3-D feel)
- if no:
configurable colour/blend, etc. In earlier question (other elements in REAPER already account for the blending, for example when selected)

@ labyrinth:

Comments appreciated, thanks.

I wasn't quite clear: I was suggesting a list of configurable elements for the horizontal grid lines. I'd definitely like to see any pixel weight (aka height), including 1px.

Whether or not they're themed should be an option (if this helps with system resource usage). I agree an image doesn't really make sense/sounds a bit like overkill. But two colours is definitely a good thing (as Shan suggests here: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=32219).

As far as blending is concerned, I suppose the issue of z-order would also have to be addressed. e.g., are they over/under items, over/under vertical grid lines, markers, regions, time selection, etc.

Friendly to system resources is the good one :) . Today I mixed a song which crackled and crept on the gfx output. As soon as I limited the visibility to two tracks (from 50) the CPU use went right down by at least 15% . (AMD4200 X2 here)

I feel this is needed for those of us who keep the edit window one color because it speeds up work flow and production. When there are literally thousands of edits and many items in large sessions, these horizontal lines quickly help the eye locate items and edit points etc.

1-10 pixels of multiple colors for the talented themers who can give us stuff that won't strain the eyes from many hours of use etc.

Horizontal Grid:

this will also complete the 4 bars separation perfectly, which is much more useful than even/odd tracks separation...

note: the 4 bars color separation was already requested here

We're discussing this issue in a thread in the General forum. New shots are posted there, and you'll find advancing design ideas for how this would visually enhance the arrangement area:
