To the point:
For the moment this feature is limited to VST factory preset change triggered by MIDI pg change events. We'd like to:
1) be able to trigger Reaper's presets rather than VST factory presets only (i.e. so that we can use it on any FX)
2) using other MIDI events to trigger and/or to refine the preset change (bank select messages to focus a given track/FX before a pg change events, as suggested by schwa himself)
I voluntary don't go into further details here: the idea would be to open this feature as far as possible. But if you think I forgot something important, get in touch for an edit.
Remark: I do not talk about "preset change automation" as it's (indirectly) possible through ReaControlMIDI
[edit] I would have not dare talking about a preset envelope but schwa did!

Typical use cases:
- changing presets on FX that do not support pg change events
- performance: replacing multiple VST instances (loaded with different presets) with a single instance: less RAM/CPU use
- increasing the number of "presetisable" FX within a chain (max=16 today, i.e. pg changes on 16 channels)
