Oh, I should have followed up to say...
Computer->Properties->Advance system settings (Advanced tab of System Properties)
Performance Settings->Adjust for best performance
Turned off the animation of the BPI progress bar and let it stay in sync
.
(Pretty much the same fix as Windows 7 and XP, of course... just you always forget this stuff immediately you've done it the once.)
