Default Finale like for free?

Finale used to offer Notepad for free... however it seems that has dried up. Can anyone suggest anything that is a freebie that can take a MIDI file and produce sheet music?

Don't use it because I have GuitarPro, but I've tried Tux Guitar once and it worked alright.

Excellent. Thank you. It seems they even have it packaged as an RPM...

Hi Bubba. Personally i use "Harmony assistant" that is a very nice editor for not much money. In the free side there are some gnu projects (musescore, denemo, tuxguitar) that you can try. I believe that Tuxguitar is the more useable from the mentioned. Also "MagicScore" is offered from time to time for free in the giveawayoftheday page, if you are lucky, you can catch it.

Thanks guys.... I had no idea there was so much developed to use on Linux for music notation. Not that I was looking for Linux based software, but for this task, Linux works just fine.

Anvil studio has been around for a while, but I haven't had enough experience with it to say if this is one of it's strengths.

I have been playing with MuseScore for the past 20 mins and it is really quite excellent. Sort of Sibelius/Finale mish mash that took me no time to figure out.

Bubba,

Do you still have Sonar 4LE that came with your EMU? I used to use that for transposing horn charts. My bud would write them out and I'd hammer them into Sonar and transpose for whichever horn.

You may need a bit more 'sophistication' than what is offered in LE though...?

Yeah, I have that version of Sonar plus an old copy of Cakewalk 9 that I use for sequencing. However, the actual notation capabilities (and printing the charts so they don't look like a mess) are quite limited. A lot of the accent marks etc are impossible or at best hokey. Not to mention, 1/8 triplets come through as some sort of odd ball bastard 1/8 - 1/16 note hybrid.

I was afraid of that... Oh well...

The stuff we were doing was pretty basic and for school age kids. They probably would have passed out if you put one of those charts you are working on in front of them.

Hrm, all of these open source editors take my MIDI file and cram two measures into one... so 1/8s become 1/16s. Odd.... I wonder if they are all using a common library that isn't quite right?

wonder if BIAB and RealBand would do it? Send me the midi and I'll print 'em if you don't have those two programs. Is that all you need is a printed copy?

Nah, I just got myself into writing scores for half the world is all. So it is more than just printing it out. Thanks for looking out for me guys. I'll prolly just suck it up and get Finale Song Writer.... or see if I can't squeeze every drop of blood out of the 30 day demo that I can.

Finale Notepad 2008 IS still available as a free download, on the FinaleMusic.com website no less. Apparently they forgot to clean out their old download pages!

Here’s how:
1) Go the the Finale registration page: https://www.finalemusic.com/store/lo...ad.aspx&id=392.

2) Either register (if you’re new) or sign in (if you already are registered with Finale.

3) It will take you to the download page. This page also has the serial number you will need to “unlock” the program.

Enjoy! Probably not for long, once they realize this hole hasn’t been plugged.

Im not sure if this is the case. I remember to mail them about install Finale Notepad in ALL the computers of the school i work using my license. They answer was something like "yes! spread it all you can". Im have not read the license, but maybe all versions are allowed to redistribute.

I dl that 2008 a week ago, and installed just fine on my rig. everything seemed to go as planned, and is working as expected.

8 staves, i think, but enough for the tinkering I do (for now).

No thanks... I agreed to chart out September by EWF and a few others for a Christmas party deal we are doing seeing that I have had my head in horn charts lately, I figured it would be relatively simple enough. I am a moron some days. In any event, I got the 30 day demo of Song Writer and it is working as expected.

I just went to download Finale Notepad, got a serial number, but the download link goes nowhere (ressource not available/moved/changed name).
So maybe someone could send me the installer? That would be really great.

Cheers,

Raphael
