reinstalling windows, how do I retain settings for reaper
I have to reinstall windows again, but I have reaper exactly the way I like it
How can I save all the settings and prefs? I know I can transfer the keymap, but what about everything else, settings, options etc
Can I simply copy the reaper dir and put it back in program files afterwards, will it work, it doesn't change the registry does it?

This is what i owuld do;
-- copy the Reaper Program folder and its contents,
-- copy the Reaper Application Data folder and its contents,
-- copy my Reaper project files folder and its contents (just in case).
You might wish to make two copies of each onto different external disks/USB sticks and make sure you can read them.
I am 99% sure the Reaper does not use the Windows Registry (apart from registering the Reaper ReWire device - that should get reregistered when you next install Reaper).

i`d like to see a small app that actually make a backup of the settings, prefs, etc ... so when i execute the app and hit "backup", it would ask me for a folder to store the backup to, and lateron, when i reinstalled the os and reaper, i`d execute that app again, saying restore reaper settings, and the app would ask me to point to the backup folder, and to select the backup-file and by selecting it the backup would be restored. that would be nice ... one could even go further and say that the backup-app gives you some option on _what_ to backup from reaper or _what_ to restore from the backup file, so we could backup/restore only the parts we need ...
actually, it would also be cool to be able to do all this from within reaper ... just an idea ...

Just to add to this.I've not re-formatted my System drive since I installed WinXP on it years ago because of this system back up system I use which most of us can(See you hard drive maker's site for free back up software),

I think a big feature for reaper which none of the other daws have would be a complete user config file system, whereby you back all of your settings/prefs/keymaps etc into one single file. Then you could move it between machines easily, or copy all your settings when you change pc. I work between 3 pc's, if I change something on one, I want to be able to transfer it to the other two

Yes exactly, I asked for it in acid pro, but they never listened. I don't think any daws have this feature, it would be really helpful to a lot of professional musicians who dont have time to faff around getting everything back how it was. Also to people who work on more than one pc.
Does anyone know where the application data is held in windows 7? I successfully ported my settings to my xp pc but I cant find the reaper app data folder in windows 7, to copy the folder to.

the way it is now , is the best
it won't be easy to read one file, with all reaper settings.
right now all the file settings, are simple text, located in one folder
(that you can pack and handle as one file),
no registery settings.
just perfect.
EDIT: for the backup/restore idea, if you make a short cut to reaper setting folder
you can handle all these files with browser and text editor
no need for special app.

floating windows will be Z-order customizable.

Excellent idea.If this had been pre-WinXP I'd have written a little .bat file to do it

I would rather trust a copy command which I can verify, than an app which
might fail, only to discover the failure when its too late. Don't fix the unbroken.

Bump... I'm trying to move my installation over to Win 7 and can't find the REAPER application settings folder in Win 7. It's weird, the REAPER settings aren't in the new AppData folder (equivalent of XP's "application data" folder), ie there's no REAPER folder in there.
Did anyone have any luck with this? Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers!
Ben

Thanks for that Sheppola. Here's some more weird then - search can't find reaper.ini anywhere.
It's Windows 7 64 bit, if that makes any difference...

Hmmm.Could be the folder it's in is a system folder and or hidden. In win98/XP I would send you to use Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder options/View and show file types/folders etc that you want. Also try a search just with the word reaper on it's own.
