Checking this thing out!
Hi all. New here Im a long time cakewalk/sonar user considering Reaper.. although, at the price.. there's not much to consider ;> I've always been pretty happy with sonar, until recently when I purchased a couple of UAD cards.. it has been a giant headache since! Any UAD Sonar users here with good news on Reaper? I'm at work, so I can't install it and play with it just yet, but I might take off a little early.. cough.. cough.. lol.

Hey David,
I've been using (4) UAD-1 cards with REAPER and the contrast to the performance I got in SONAR 6.2 (and earlier versions) is striking (no native CPU munching, no dropouts, no gapping, you can even enable and play through a loop region flawlessly). There are a few tweaks you need to do in REAPER's Preferences (like enabling the UAD-1 Syncronous Mode) and then you too will be experiencing UAD-1 mixing bliss!
BTW, I left you a few REAPER forum links for you to read up on @ the UAD-1 forum in response to your post thread there.
Cheers,
Billy Buck

Hey David,
Just wanted to say "welcome", there's a fair few ex Cakewalk/Sonarites here.
You'll find Reaper very different for example for wave edits than Sonar. The key is to split items rather than use tools.
Seems strange at first, but once you get used to it I find it better, especially if you make use of macros for common edit tasks. If you haven't already done so, download the PDF User Guide, that should help you with a lot of things.

This is how I have these specific REAPER Preferences set for optimum UAD-1 performance.
VST Plugin Settings:
Audio Settings:
Audio Playback Settings:
Audio Buffering Settings:
I can usually get an average of up to 90%-94% DSP load across all my cards. I typically mix @ a project latency of 1024, but can drop that down to 128 samples (or anything in between) when I need to. Like playing my Les Paul through the Space Echo, with input monitoring on, for realtime performance. That is quite a trip!
How many UAD-1 cards are you using?
Cheers,
Billy Buck

Way off topic here Billy, how do you save those pics at that size? I use print screen, paste into paint and save as Jpeg...they always end up too big on the Reaper site (but don't at KVR for some reason?). Doesn't really affect me now I have a widescreen monitor for the net, but still...
Apologies for any derailment.

Try XNView from xnview.com . It can snap up screenshots that you can them trim and resize.

I use an old (and free) AnalogX app called Capture:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...em/capture.htm
It is small, compact utility that can capture a particular screen shot or the entire desktop and you assign a keyboard shortcut to do the capture. I then take that saved .bmp file into Photoshop, resize, crop as needed & then save as a .jpg file.
Cheers,
Billy Buck

Bevoss... take that same Alt-Print screen pasted pic in plain old MS Paint and click the "Image" menu item, select "Stretch / Skew" and put 50% / 50% or whatever in the stretch box for horzontal/vertical.
Half size 1/4 size whatever. "It's in there..."
But it won't do much more than that...

Lots of good graphics editing freeware here, I can especially recommend PaintStar.

Hey, thanks for the info Billy! I have two UADs. One PCI and one PCIe. Very happy with the plugs so far. I'm really wanting to get the Neve CS & LA3A.. but holding off for now.

Okay, back on topic....
As you are checking out REAPER:
1) Be sure to download the excellent manual for reference
2) Remember right mouse click is your best friend. REAPER is designed with a context menu for most everything. If you are in a window or over hovering over an icon....right mouse click
3) Tool tips pop up when you hover over an icon
4) Learn the keyboard shortcuts and create your own action macros to do a task that is otherwise not readily available.
5) You easily customize the look of REAPER. Do check out the various color schemes or create your own.
6) Updates are posted frequently with bug fixes and new features & enhancements. You can update on top of an existing install in a few seconds.
7) This forum is a great resource to get questions answered, bugs reported and features requested.
Here is a shot of REAPER with a custom color scheme, many of the Views docked, the Mixer View set up in rows, EZdrummer setup in multi-out VSTi mode inside a Folder track (from a Track Template), many UAD-1 plugins, yes, that is the new LA-3A, and the Master Bus setup for K-14 metering:

Thanks, that program works great. Set a keystroke to capture the active window, shift-S to resize (800 x 600 seems to fit this forum perfectly), and I'm done.
Now, back on topic
