Default Yes, but lo fi

I'd like to do an imagey companion to Ninjam, in fact I think there's a whole lot of stuff that can go with it - there should be a big colourful screen to go with it, not that ugly little box. And you should be able to mix video feeds and text instructions or bits of other sound sources, but to begin with I'd like to post on a website an svg image, and start using inkscape. I'd listen to the jamming, post the url through the chat, and I'd set a cron job or something to save and post it every few seconds to the website, so I'm transferring data too but never as fast as the musicians. And it's really simple to do. So though I might be a crap illustrator, I can still join in the fun even if I don't want to do any playing. Let me know if that sounds good for a start - maybe at least to figure out what can be done with it. Certainly to fit with the jam philosophy it should have a testing ground, and it might be easy to stream svg like that - just line after line as it gets created. (meanwhile of course it would just be from a file upload).

me and Neimad here, tried a stadnalone approach to a "vidjam". We both installed the MS Windows Media Encoder : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.mspx

This is basically a separate video feed server that you can run in parallel with NINJAM. Anyone with a webcam and Windows can use it. This is easier then having the video streamed through an IM app like Yahoo msgr or MSN because you are broadcasting a video stream that multiple people can see without registering anywhere. All they need to see you is the Windows media player, cut and paste the address you supply them with and you have a video feed which is delayed about 20 seconds.

Still not bad, if you play with the settings a bit you can optimize that to get rid of the delay and increase quality.

We only streamed the video to eachother and left the sound on through Ninjam.

Again, im sorry that this solution is limited to Windows users for transmitting. I guess there are ways for other platforms like Linux and Mac to receive the stream.

PS, this eats a bit of bandwidth, so be aware that if you are on "tight" broadband NINJAM might start cutting :P

Another option might be Skpye? You'd probably want to use a talk button as well so you didn't have audio bleed from other users. Seems like you'd have quite a bandwidth hit too between streaming audio and sending / receiving video?

Just my two cents...

yah, it does change things a bit when there's video - kind of distracting too.

i dont see the logic on adding video for one it would take up bandwidth possibly causing lag in performance especially with multi users.
and #2 i dont understand why you would wanna see other players since what they play doesn;t hit your pc until a measure afterward

music and picture don't always have to sync up. and hopefully there will be an option to use video or not, so if bandwidth is an issue then people can opt out.

it will be fun to try it out and see what we can do with it.

Default Already doing it!

Avatar's suggestion of using Second Life is the ideal solution for accompanying video. You keep your anonymity ( if you so desire) and you can also spoof up your image, kinda like KISS!

I've already seen a boatload of Ninjammers there and we've put on great performances for TIPPING non- musicians who appreciate our talents. If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor and explore this. There's way more than just live music too, but personally I go there mainly for music. In fact I carry my virtual Flying V with me all the time.

What might be an idea is to use a Java Webcam Push type applet or code somethign simular where people can set in there ninjam a URL that keeps getting read every so many seconds then updated to others.
I think this would be the most possible at the moment and use least amount of bandwidth.
Even if it does not constantly update it could still use a URL insted of from local hard drive. This way only peoples download bandwidth is used reading the image from the net and no upload is used sending to others in the room.
With all the sites around simular to image shack it should be easy enough for people to add a avatar to ninjam.
I'd love this as an avatar helps identify people quicker and some will change there name slightly but still want others to know it is them.

Default pling!

i agree that adding some sort of avatar, or optional video feed will make the jamming experience more personal. thing is tough, do we really want that? I guess in a way it would stimulate community growth, but since the internet is also earth's open sewer there would be definitly need for a grieve-filter.

NINBOT's server(s) is live on SecondLife, apparently:

(My PC is no longer capable of logging in to SL, so I can't see what happens there...)

Hiya Synthany,

At the mo we get round this using Stickam.com which allows up to 9 people using webcam to cam, voice and text conference along with many more able to come in and watch and hear.
I'm going to put the Radio Stream on a page with the cam soon and hoping stickam will allow the stream to become a show which then gets 100s of people in but only 9 can have cam but this could always be set so only certain people could have cam.

We been tailing it the last week or so.

Were hoping to have a VDJ who would screen capture Secondlife and also they would be able to login to the stickam account and form there they can stream the SL window aswell as change to other peoples cams as the main cam showing. Also if they want to record the whole show they can also do that.

But I'm looking forward to doing some stuff with ya when ya properly setup there, I remember u saying something about being in a new area.

http://andycam.hopto.org
for low spec or basic and
http://nincam.hopto.org
for complete page.

Clicking the Magnify glass will get anyone into the proper cam room where other peoples cams can be seen but it does require registering with stickam but as of yet I haven't received any spam from other company's on the email address I use with them.

I do a lot with SL and Ninjam and find virtual worlds the perfect visual addition as you can also interact with an audience.

See my posts "International Bitstream Boogie" and "SynaesthAsia" on my blog http://www.sonicviz.com/music/members/6/blog.php for more details.

Jam on!
