ID Midi Channels
When importing a multi-channel midi file spread across several tracks is there a simple way to identify the midi channel number for each track, or better yet import the channel number directly to the track as some programs do? I realize I can do it by checking the event list for each channel and setting it for each track with reacontrolmidi but it seems there should be a simpler way.....

For MIDI tracks that are multi-channel (that is, contain MIDI messages on more than one channel) - the channel number is included in the generated track name:
This Cream MIDI file had three MIDI tracks in it; 2 of which were Multi-channel.
Nit pick: imo the channel number (10) should be shown on the Drums track too.
Not sure why how you are using ReaControlMIDI

Thanks for the reply. In Reaper the midi files I've been importing show the artist, instrument name and song title or a variation of that. No midi channel number. Perhaps this has to do with how the file was created and saved. If I open them in a small freeware program called Speedy Midi each track shows the midi channel as well as the volume, pan and patch settings. I guess it's just the way Reaper handles midi, which I think is little quirky. I use reacontrolmidi to adjust the volume and pan by track though I realize I can use the Midi Track Control to do this as well. Thanks again.

Here, Reaper is adding the channel number to the generated track name.
Maybe your MIDI file is multi-track, each with a single channel? And it just so happens that the MIDI on each of those tracks is on a different channel?
Perhaps you can attach it?

Tried this: Imported midi file to a single track, opened in editor and exported. When reopened to multitracks the midi channels were displayed. I know there are midi formats 0 and 1 so maybe this is the problem.

As I guessed, that MIDI file is multi-track, each with MIDI on a single channel. So no channel numbers in the track names.
But ... try this:
-- set the MIDI import Preferences to "Always prompt"
-- drag and drop the MIDI file
-- answer the pop-ups as follows and you will get the channels:
Ta da!

Hey, that did it! On import I had been leaving "Expand midi tracks to new Reaper tracks" checked since that seemed like the right choice. Simple solution. Thanks so much!
