Default Crop midi item

I am new to Reaper and I have a question I hope someone can help me with. How can I crop a midi item in Reaper? If you look at the screen shot I have recorded a long item. I then want to cut from the beginning and the end of this item to get a new shorter item. However if I drag the beginning and end in the old item seems to be retained. Then if I try to copy the shorter item by dragging the end it will just display the old larger item..

Can anyone please advise how I can create a permanent shorter item from a longer item?

Use command "Trim selected items to selected area". That will crop your item to time selection.

I thought "trim" would do this too but I do not get it to work. See my second attached screenshot. Seems like it does not trim in the beginning?

Key,
What is it that you want to do? Are you looking to "Loop source"? If so, see here http://www.cockos.com/wiki/index.php/Loop_Source

I quote myself " I then want to cut from the beginning and the end of this item to get a new shorter item.".. I want a new item where just the section I have selected is part of the item.

First make sure this option is checked in the prefs:

Then make a time selection, select the item and use "Trim selected items to selected area". The new item should be looping properly.

Not for the trimming, but for the looping (otherwise the loop starts with the part you just trimmed away).

D'oh

.. actually it doesn't work here - the section after the selected area is lost but the part in front of the selected are still appears in the loop

-- as in this:

-- I ended up Gluing the trimmed item then looping it.
