Why do you need to shout? And use foul language? Thinking of it, why should we need to suffer your ugly posting? Behave!

I much prefer them the way they are - it makes little sense in terms of information visualisation to have vertical meters in the TCP.

I think I'll start an FR to remove ALL the meters... We'll use electric shock! A low current, high voltage source will be secured to the users ear lobes (or testicles) ANYTHING clips... "BBBZZZZZTTTTT!"
"UGH! WHICH TRACK!?!?!?" "BBBZZZZZZTTTT!" "AAAAAAHHHH!!!"
See? Those horizontal meters aren't so bad...

Especially since it make no sense whatsoever. All the newer screen have as much horizontal estate as anybody can use, but vertical screen estate is at a premium(even the very big one only have 1080 vertical pixel nowadays). Why waste it?
Completely illogical.

BTW: those who have VISTA can do that by Right-click on the Desktop -> Graphics setting

i wanted to say that you FR is a popular one already, but:
- not in the way you say it
- not because the reason you say.
the FR is talking about vertical small meters, when the TCP is narrow,
not always, and not because the horizontal are ugly.
the horizontal are needed, beautiful and just in place.
you can resize the track not to see them,
and/or set in the preferences, not to see them at all.
EDIT: and i'd like to see these settings for the coming verticals

A smaller, vertical TCP meter option would be nice, but the existing meters aren't exactly ZOMG WTF BIG HUGE COVERING MY WHOLE SCREEN.
Personally, I leave my tracks small enough that they don't show a meter unless I've got them armed for recording. Meters are what the mixer panel is for.

You can always remove them completely in Options->Preferences->Appearance
'Show meters in track control panels'
