Default Crossfade on Punch-In Doesn't Work

Okay, I'm pulling (what's left of my) hair out. I've recorded an electric guitar track and now I'm punching in a short phrase, which works just fine. However, I'm trying to to crossfade my punch-in with my take, but when I hit the 'S' key, I get the crossfade in the track above my guitar track (which is my snare).

I've deleted and recorded my punch-in about a dozen times, but still no crossfade. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Dale

I'm not sure of the purpose of using punch in in the digital age.. unless I'm not understanding your use of the term...

Couldn't the same result be had by using a new track for the new material and then moving the section you like into the original track as precisely as you needed?

Have you seen this Kenny video?
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/videos.php#I1Il-LhyMs8
(Cross fades mentioned about 1.00.)

I don't know why you are using Split actually and also why it is affecting the "wrong" track.

Unlike some of the Reaper videos I've seen, I had to actually "accept" the take before I could apply the crossfade. Operator error.
