I just saw this today. I use Winamp pretty much every day, since 2000 or so... I'll keep using it. I have a copy on my Google Drive. As far as the current bloat added after the Nullsoft sale, I just slap on the classic skin and all that crap goes away.

It's a long time ago...
but wasn't there the ability to load a certain winamp plugin (which could be setup in the prefs) that make the arrange view background flashing to the beat ?
I think this was discontinued due to the constant crashing of the app.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

That's the reason why i use foobar.
I hate almost everything about it, but at least it's no star ship and has a play button, playlists, shuffle, queue
and vst support (third-party). (I use tobybears ChannelGrabber sometimes to record live streams.)

I remember using Winamp many years ago. What struck me is the beautiful interface. It was/is probably one of the best looking music players i have seen.

I read about Resonic in a magazine. It is still in Alpha but I've been using it for months now and it is rock solid and easily the best audio player for my taste.
http://resonic.at/
It can be installed as a portable app and supports the formats that I need (WAV, MP3, Flac) and several others. It loads quickly and just works well. Completely free, at least for now.

I use foobar because I like to see my music as well as listen to it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mrc52b6kvb...28Large%29.JPG
When I want to quickly jump around through my music folders, though, I use resonic

Check out the new twist. According to the verge Microsoft is purportedly in talks with AOL about buying Winamp.

What I find curious is that what matters to me the most, apparently nobody else cares about:
I still use an old version of Winamp because *it starts up faster*.
Foobar, etc.. takes a while. Granted, nothing takes as long as ITunes, but still...
It amazes me that in the 21st century, as far as I'm concerned our daily use of computers is really still mired in the 90's. Programs should start INSTANTLY by now.
...or am I looking for a reason to get a SSD?

Dude, you should try Mixxx! Mixxx.org
It's DJ software that has MIDI learn. It's free. I don't know if it plays internet radio like Reaper Radio but Foobar2000 does.
Mixxx kicks the alpaca's ass.

I emailed Justin a couple years ago and asked him if I payed for Reaper, would he receive any monies? Answer:
No.
That said, I still use Winamp every day as my music player. I used the visualizer in a school performance project projected on a huge backdrop.
I love the "manual playlist" option. I haven't found a media player that does this anywhere.
Also, it was the first media player I ever used. I lump this in with other things like AIM, Hotmail, and Message Boards. And 56k.
The 1990's are disappearing.

That's not likely ever going to happen broadly in practice. The reason is that there is a ceiling of frustration (time willing to wait) and that ceiling will always be bumped up against period because there is always one more feature that will be added to the app once there is more ceiling available.
It doesn't matter how fast computers get because it isn't a computer speed/app speed issue, its a "we have this much additional headroom and unused headroom like unused memory is wasted" type of logic. Been that way long before computers even existed.

Kind of annoyed about how many articles about this that don't even mention Justin, like it was something AOL created, rather than bought and slowly destroyed...
I use Winamp with a plugin to load VSTs so I can use IK ARC2 when listening to music.
I never liked Foobar, this Aimp thing looks pretty Winampish, if the VST loading plugin works, I'll probably just use that.

Not picking on you Carbon, but I've never understood some of the crazy skins. I read one person refer to them as looking like "Optimus Prime's Taint" - a fitting description in a lot of cases.

Do people still use computers to just *listen* to other people making music, instead of using them to make music themselves? That sounds so... passive! The aural equivalent to pr0n. Ew.

When you know nothing about music creation, you should listen to music, what you like. I listened to some songs and gave interesting ideas from it. It's very necessary to listen to others music.

Exactly what people who know nothing about great sex would say about pr0n - it's better than nothing, and you may get some interesting ideas from it.

A bad example, but I understood it. If you want to write a house music, listen to house, to rock, listen to rock.
