Default Remove Silence from Video

I'm new to Reaper and am overwhelmed by the features and functionality. I only want to use it for one specific task, and that's removing long periods of silence from video recordings of online classes that I record with Camtasia. I can do this manually with Cam Studio but that's very labor-intensive.

The forum articles I have read here assume that the reader has basic familiarity with Reaper, which I don't have. Can anyone point me to a very elementary step-by-step way to use Dynamic Split or some other Reaper function(s) to open an avi video file, find all the silences, cut them out, and save the result as an mp4 file?

Thanks so much, this is an amazing program but overkill for most of what I do. However, to bend a phrase, silence [removal] is golden.

You can just use Auto trim

search (Auto trim) in action list
double click on
Item: Auto trim/split items (remove silence)...

Then Read the REAPER manual
page 151 (7.37 Auto Trim/Split Items)

Also it is doable with dynamic split
Read
page 149 (7.36 Dynamic Splitting - Remove Silent Passages)
page 174 (9.14 Dynamic Splitting)

I tried this yesterday, but double-clicking on the "Auto trim/split items (remove silence)" doesn't do anything, so I can't get that dialog to display.

Right-click doesn't give me an option to Run either, so how do I get to the next step?

You have to select a media item then double click (or run) the action.

OK, I started over with a New Project, then imported my AVI file. Now the menu appears when I double-click on Item: Auto trim/split items (remove silence)...

I left all the settings alone and hit Run. After about a minute of displaying "Processing...", the box closed. I hit the Play button but get nothing but silence. Most of the settings in the PDF don't mean anything to me because it's not a lingo I'm familiar with. So how should I set these parameters to successfully eliminate the silence?

I manually scrolled right until I saw a waveform, and played it. Although I saw the meters jumping, I did not hear anything. So there's another issue: how do I hear the audio?

Insert Oscilloscope Meter-(Cockos) Fx
capture highest amplitude of quiet parts in Oscilloscope
Drag mouse on hold to freeze Oscilloscope
increase the range until you see the quiet parts
then left mouse drag the wave form in Oscilloscope to find the highest spot
read the value for example -21db
run Auto trim

set the threshold to that value (in this case -21db)
set ignore silence 2000 ms (which is 2 second)

it means cut everything below -21db if the duration of quiet parts is longer than 2 second.

I can't find that on any menus. How do I insert it?

The rest of your video looks clear and I hope to try it out. Thanks.
