Who's using the wimpiest computer?
I'll start.
At my teaching gig, I've been running Reaper, always fully updated, on a 2001 P3 850 laptop with 1g ram, for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for years. It's the only program on it, and runs perfectly. Always.
I'm not pushing it's limits, by any means. Just a few tracks and vst's at a time, and no recording.
I'm sure that someone out there can do better (worse?) than that. Let's explore the lower limits!

Thats pretty wimpy and i thought mine was low..
I use a 1.7Ghz 768mb RAM 2001 old laptop Pentium M
Reaper runs fine, but it does cough and splutter - i think i may need to reformat.
I use Windows XP which i think is the leanest thing I can run on a PC like this. I dont use many VST's but would like to use FX and use this as a mixing machine like a tape recorder with Reaper.
My sounds and instruments are taken care by a fast Macbook Pro which I use as all my synths/VST's and record into the PC Laptop.
Im just trying to see how best to use both platforms together, with a network so i can share audio bbetween the two machines, plus looking into ReaStream and Rearoute and the others.
If not, I think I may drop this and use the Macbook Pro completely. I think cus its there I feel I should try and use it as with Reaper, its so efficient

Just out of interest, would it be possible to sync both machines up to spread processing power?

Using 'Reamote' you can network a couple of computers using one for your VSTs. I haven't used this, but search the forum you'll find some info.

I run REAPER with Superior drummer and a ton of fx with 512 ram. Most of the ram is coming from virtual memory lol.. But I have a dual core, so that helps on cpu.
No cash to buy ram, but.. It only hickups if I have a lot of fx (25+)...
Oh yeah, takes about 30 seconds to bring up windows like FX windows and such lol, slight drawback lol. Dont dare try to switch from reaper to firefox tabs, def asking for a 1 min lockup lol.

I have posted some threads on Reamote and the other one Rea...? (I can never remember the names!) as alot of people are looking at boosting their computers with ram and processing from others nearby..
I hope that in v4.03 that they re-address Reamote and change it into a single MIDI Audio processing stream for any plug in, from remote computers, regardless of platform so it was one single solid processing stream for connecting other machines that are lying around..

I've also been using my Pentium M laptop (PIII 1,6GHz) and recorded 12 tracks simultaniously with it (through a Motu 828MkII and the Behringer ADA8000 using Reaper) with reasonable latency without any hiccup.
This is totally awesome.

My travelling/holiday system is an Acer Aspire One 532H-2BS Netbook Atom (N450) 1.66GHz with 1 GB of RAM. Luckily I got one with an XP operating system.
A Line 6 Toneport UX1 allows low latency Tonedirect monitoring without having to use a low buffer size setting, which avoids pops and clicks. Plus, with this set up, I find Jamstix 3 for drums works really well because it puts a low demand on CPU and reducing the Dynamics Realism gives a low hit on the RAM.
I just need to disable the wireless and it all works great.

This thread = Wow.
Mine is a pretty wimpy 1.7 core duo.....I know, some of you have me beat by a core, but how about 1.5 gb of free disk space? Huh? That's my system partition anyway, and I just cleaned it.

Hahaha, I'm just kidding. I used to have a system with those specs when I started using n-Track in the mid/late 1990s, though. With a 33kbps modem!

Yes I think your winning!
So how much can you get out of it, and are you using asio and any tweaks you want to share for getting the most juice out of our "slowies" with reaper ?

Well, I'm on vacation at the moment, so I can't check, but I think it's running waveout. But the computer has never been online, so there's no antivirus etc.
I can run a few tracks at once (4 or 5), and use a few low power native effects (eq, comp). I mostly use it for stereo playback, to figure out songs for students. Looping parts, slowing stuff down, using centercanceller, that sort of thing. It always works perfectly for my needs, and I have no reason to upgrade.

I use a 4U ATX Gigsampler DAW for Biker Bar gigs where a Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Black Grand, First Call Horns, ARP String/Melotron is all I need.
The Scope DSP card has the B3 emulation and STM2448 Mixer/effects.
Tyan TigerCub
Intel PII 1GHz Coppermine
440BX CHipset
Matrox G450 AGP4x 16MB RAM
768MB SDRAM
It kicks butt 2 or 3 times a year where I play for 50 bucks, and free booze.
The Wurlitzer and RHodes still sound better than the Kontakt versions, but I haven't nullified it scientifically for proof yet..

Cool, thx. A friend left a pc here months ago for me to fix. Its been fixed but he just isnt showing to pick it up, hence wondering about utilising it.
I guess its likely to be anything but straightforward tho
On topic: Up until last year I had been using a 1.4ghz mobile athlon, a barton I think, on an Abit NF7 v2, 32 bit, 2gb of ram for a looooooong time. The system stopped me from using BFD for years, which was one of the main reasons for upgrading.

I'm running ver 4.02 on an Asus EeePC netbook (Atom 1.6GHz,1GB) with Tapco interface, using ASIO4ALL. So far, never run out of audio tracks (though I never need more than about 25) before any glitching occurs. However, I am limited to maybe a couple of VSTi and half a dozen VST FX, so I have to do a lot of FX/VSTi rendering. I tell myself that this is not neccesarily a bad thing, as it forces me to make decisions early in the production process, and helps me to get things finished!

Ok all you Ferrari-driving adrenalin junkies, top this. (Maybe "top" isn't the right word....)
I just fired up Reaper V4.02 on a 495mhz AMD Duron laptop with 256m ram and a 5g hard drive, running xp home SP1.
It's running a multitrack project with 11 24bit 48k wavs glitch-free, with an instance of ReaEQ and ReaComp actively working on every track.
That's with no Reaper tweaks. Fresh install. Straight out of the box.
Consider the bar lowered.

Any tweaks to that PC in order to run these tracks?
Did you say this is on xp or w98se?
And is this recording to it's internal drive?
I'm running reaper on a brother typewriter with it's original ribbon. Beat that
