Default Reaper/Finale conflict

I am running Reaper 5.02 on Windows 10. Tascam US4x4 interface.

Everything was running fine, but Finale was unable to talk to the Tascam interface. After working with Finale support, it seems that uninstalling/reinstalling the Tascam drivers and disabling the webcam was all it took to make Finale work with the Tascam.

However, at this point, Reaper refused to recognize the Tascam, giving an error on startup - "error initializing buffers". I have seen this error before and was always able to work around by rebooting the Tascam, but now no luck.

So, I have found that if I set Reaper to "DirectSound" instead of ASIO, it works fine. Is there a downside to doing this? And if so, I would like to try the ASIO4all driver that I have read about. How do I get the Tascam to use this driver instead of its own?

TIA

Are you trying to run them at the same time?

No, I learned from experience that only one program can use the audio device at one time. And, in fact, some of them won't "let go" so I would usually have to reboot the audio interface before running Reaper. Now, however, Reaper gives an error with ASIO even if it is the first thing to run after rebooting the computer and the interface.

directsound typically has very high latency. this might be an issue for overdubbing.

It's a windows dedicated sound driver, free, which you can download here:

http://www.asio4all.com/

In your devices you then chose ASIO4ALL.

Usually a dedicated driver for your soundcard works better though (well, not in your case evidently; but there's gotta be something wrong with the setup).
