Imported media sounding muffled
I've been trying to import some samples of a camera shutter, but when played back in Reaper they sound all muffled, like they're underwater.
I read a few similar threads and one suggested it may be to do with the automatic fade in on imported media. I switched that off but the problem still persisted.
So then I changed my preferences to 'import media at source tempo'. But that made no difference either.

Still haven't worked out what's going wrong.
Anyone have any ideas?

What file format are the samples you are trying to import?
Also IF they are wavs it might be worth checking you are at the same bitrate, etc., in Reaper

Try importing something else (something equally short?) to see if the problem is just with these samples. If so, post a link to the samples and we'll see if we can reproduce the problem.

I tried importing some other files (mp3s) and had the same issue.
I've attached a .zip file which contains the .wav file I originally tried importing.
It's definitely to do with the bitrate I think as I'm getting an information pop up telling me it's been resampled.
Thank you for your replies by the way

Sounds OK here (I think) and look OK:
Looking at the Source properties it is 96,000 bps, 16 bits depth.

It sounds excellent here. Can you render a stretch with it repeating and a) play it in REAPER, b) play it in some other media player, and if it sounds strange, post it here so we can hear it?

Hmm, that's interesting. I rendered the sound and the .wav file Reaper produced was perfect and sounded fine. It's only that playback in Reaper that sounds odd. The sample sounds fine in Audacity.

Can you define "odd"? We've got "all muffled, like they're underwater."
Slower? High frequencies missing?
If that's still right, I'd diagnose either;
# Sample rate mismatch - something's seeking 48k, something's seeking 44.1
# FX on track or it's route to the master
or
# FX in sound card

It's the same for all sound files. I went through as many as I could to make sure. Everything sounds like it has a very heavy high pass filter on. But again, if you render it, the resulting file sounds fine.
Don't think it's the track. Since it's just a blank project where all I did was import a media file.
Don't think it's the sound card since I'm not having this issue on any other software.
Could be the sample rate mismatch but I've no idea how to go about fixing that if it is.

Just a couple random shots in the dark:
Is Reaper using the same resampling algorithm on playback as in render? I'm not looking at it right now, but I think you can set that at various places in the project.
Are you sure there's nothing on your Monitor FX that you either put there accidentally or forgot about? Shift-click the FX button on the Master track. Those effects are global for the program, and once you put something in there it's applied after the Master on every project.
