Default I just listened.....

...and it's very cool. Nice job. Clean recording. Good production. Lovely strings. Well done.

I believe this would actually be considered 6/8 time.

Like it! Weird. Yes. No. Feels like Miss Marple dances while listening to Georg Gershwin's Summertime. No waltz. It's indeed 6/8. And the livin' is easy
As i said. Like it!

How do you tell 3/4 from 6/8? I thought they were interchangeable.

I like this beat, nice work.

This probably isn't the best explanation of why it's 6/8 and not 3/4, but it's how I understand it. With this song, if you count:

1-2-3-1-2-3-kick-2-3-snare-2-3

it doesn't feel like it resolves right with the kick/snare pattern. You could force it into a 3/4 count like:

1-and-2-and-3-and-kick-and-2-snare-3-and

but then the emphasis on the "and" beat with the snare just feels sort of wrong. When you count it out as 6/8, then it feels like it resolves correctly because it puts the kick on the downbeat:

1-2-3-4-5-6-kick-2-3-snare-5-6

[edit]also, @pgathriller - I love the song, a lot of nice tension and release!

Default Accentuate the positive......

Listen to a true classical waltz. The "One " beat is accented each time. One-2-3, One-2-3. (Heavy, identical accent on the "one", each time.)

In 6/8, the accent is different. In 6/8, the "one" is heavily accented, whereas the "four" is a lesser, weaker, accent.

ONE-2-3-four-5-6. ONE-2-3-four-5-6. ("Four" being a weaker accent.)

It all about the accents.

first impression was it might be like "basehead 2000bc", then the strings made me think "art of noise", then i stopped looking for influences and just listened.

pretty cool

It's 12/8, or the triplet variation of 4/4. Based on the chord changes.

compare to this Ray Charles clip -

Or this by Freddie King (song = Percy Mayfield's classic)
