Again, thanks for the awesome (by definition of the word) theme.
Thanks. I agree about the key labels, it's one of several fixes I've made to an unreleased version that has been waiting for v5 to drop.

It's also lighter on resources because v5 allows for nested folder paths to the images.

This is my favourite theme so far, so easy on the eyes. Thanks! Is the name a Dark Tower reference? just finished reading those a few weeks ago.

Just getting in on the thank you bandwagon.

I am petty new to Reaper, and I appreciate all the great themes out there but I doubt I will find another theme that works so well or me.

Thank you Commala

You're very welcome, thank you for the kind words. I uploaded a new version today that brings several improvements, mostly small tweaks. The next version has a several substantial changes, and as some people may not prefer them, I decided that the theme as it stands now should also be preserved, and so I added the small changes that I've been making.

The changes include utilizing png folder nesting which makes the theme smaller in size and resources use, but may require v5? I'm not certain. Changes also include font and background adjustments to improve legibility, especially in the dark theme.

Yes it is, it's from Wolves of the Calla, which was probably my favourite of the series.

Just checking in. I've been using the one called Default_Commala_3 Unpacked (i think?) for a good while now. I'm wondering if the newest versions have the indented tracks in folders? I didn't care for that, and I believe you made me a version that didn't have that. I might try the latest, but if it has those indented tracks, is there a way to not have that option? Thanks, and I absolutely love your theme.

Thanks!

For the next version I've made it so that the MCP track indentation is disabled after the MCP is sized below a certain height. Here's a gif showing this with the improved FX rack layout

However, it's also possible to comment out a few lines in the rtconfig to disable the indentation entirely. I can simply give you a version of the theme with this already done, easily enough

That would be much appreciated! I don't know why, but those indented, stair-stepped tracks just haven't grown on me yet! Thank you.

Great theme !! I prefer (slightly) Commala over Commala Light.

Did Commala 4 get updated when Commala 5 Light was changed? My Theme list only shows Commala 4; no 5.

One subtle key is the definite shade change for 'Selected Tracks'. Keep the good work coming as you work through subtle, yet important, improvements.

Regards and thanks

http://screencast.com/t/3gBTwBNw

this is my fav theme thanks so much for your time with it!!! truly appreciated bro!

made this slight adjustment
actions/show action list
set "T" to show theme development/tweaker
set "2" "item set to random colors"

in tweaker window set "media item background fill mode" to hsv adjust

if u dont use the random color action the theme itself has the media items set to a very nice white which looks really good also with the darker grey/black background i think also. maybe there is another way to adjust it also someone can chime in! again thank you bro!!

Very nice! I like the indentation of tracks within folders, within the mixer panel! There are a lot of aspects of this theme that I like, but that was something which really helps me keep my place when working in the mixer panel view.

Default v5.x control buttons

Love the theme. I'm only recording voiceover, so I don't need a lot of bells and whistles. I've modified the color scheme to my liking to help with my visual work flow. I was just wondering if it were possible to incorporate the v5.x control pannel buttons? I kind of like the rounded effect and the off-set to the (|<) and (>|) being smaller and the larger font size to the "Selection" numbers

Default Please help - my MIDI editor ruler font looks awful

Hey,

I recently upgraded to REAPER v.5 and committed to Default_Commala_4_dark.
It fits my eye and looks terrific. One problem, though: I can't for the life of me figure our how to change the font on the MIDI editor ruler. There's no separate setting for that in the Theme Development/Tweaker, and I couldn't find any trace of this specific item in the rtconfig.txt. I tried to add my own line of code to the rtconfig:
set midi.editor.ruler.font [4]
and then trying to set the WALTER 4 font in the Theme Development/Tweaker for
a font I wanted, but it didn't work.

I would be eternally grateful if you could drop a hint how to tweak my font - it can't be a huge project :-))

Thank you

The midi editor ruler font looks to be OS determined, at least it appears to be the same font and size in every theme I've seen. I think the reason you're seeing the font displayed incorrectly is because of a system setting on your end (you may have scaled your OS font below 100%, or you're using an OS theme?)

It does make more sense to have the shuttle buttons adjacent. I will probably change the transport in the next version I upload. I'll add a new transport layout with larger selection readout as well, probably.

Should be getting the dark version of the theme updated for version 5 soon, I just haven't gotten to it yet, for those who have asked about this.

Default Thank´s a lot

Dear Commala,

thank you very much for sharing this.
Since Version 5 came out, I was searching for a theme.
The light version of your theme (4 & 5) are very easy on the eye.
I can look at it for hours with ease, hence my dafault theme now.

What I especially like are the endless options for MCP-layouts.
Mixing a drum-kit, the narrow faders come in very handy.

I hope you don´t mind me asking a question.
I work on a multi-monitor-setup.
I have a main-display (27" 1920x1080 16:9) which is my timeline and editor display.
I also have a mixer-display (19" 1280x1024 4:3).

On my mixer-display everything is fine until I reach an amount of aprox. 36 tracks.
Then, three rows of tracks are displayed and everthing get´s totally cluttered. I made a pic to demonstrate.

I recognized that, when the first track in the mixer is a narrow one, this does not happen.
Only two rows are displayed, which works great for me.
Most of compare tracks 5+7 where the insert and send area is shown.

The actual question now is: Is there a parameter to limit the downsizing of tracks in the mixer-window?

Thank you again for that great theme and for thinking this over.

TheWhistler,

This is a feature I think could be quite useful to have a bit of control over, whether there are two rows or three. It's outside of the themer's purview, however. In your case, I think the shift between two and three rows is happening because of the width of the layouts you've chosen. The mixer switches numbers of rows when the combined width of the tracks reaches a threshold.

Gon, ceanganb, Heavy Jerk:

You're welcome, glad it fits the bill!

Trancit:

The item background is simply transparent, with a white line. If you open the theme file and look at the item_bg_sel.png, that's really the best way to learn what's going on.

Thank´s for your reply and this great theme.
I was afraid that this is a REAPER internal thing, not changeable by any other than the devs.
But this could be a feature request, should it?

Thank you for the information...
I already assumed that, but as I tried to use your item...png´s in another theme (overwritten the existing ones), the white border was gone...
That´s, what I don´t understand... why does it have the white border in your theme, but not in a another with the same png´s???

It's probably because the other themes need to be enabled to use version 5 features. Edit the respective rtconfig.txt and add 'version 5' at the top.

I just started using this theme, love it, thank you.

Is there a way I can make ReTune more readable? Lighter? I find when I must to use it I have to switch to the light theme. And I use it all the time, singers are getting more lazy by the day.

Another big thumbs up from here, very very nice theme!

Some suggestions:

1) Having TCP background all same as "black" MCP panels - all darkened
SOLVED: had downloaded from dropbox instead of stash :S

2) Have "M" buttons red and "S" green (when turned on, of course)
EDIT: they are good red and yellow like now, please disregard...

3) Totally love how the selected items in arrange view all turn grey; it would be great if the same would happen on MIDI editor

Thank you so much again and again, seriously thinking to retire my Unempty Minima 73 customization at last :O

- Mario

I've just uploaded the latest version of my theme mod, Default Commala 4. Check it out, comments are welcome.

Too many tweaks and fixes to remember, but the main ones are below.

Once again, this mod could not be possible without the far more considerable contributions of Lerian and White Tie. Thanks to both of you. Also thanks to Nick Moritz, as I've included a few Rado icons with the theme.

Cheers

========================

Posted a new version that contains only light layouts, and a light arrange page, midi editor, bright fonts, for use in brighter rooms or by a window during daylight. The old version of Default Commala 4 I've updated to include only dark layouts, and the layouts have all been renamed so that they are interchangeable between themes. You can switch back and forth between the two themes and all layout assignments will remain.
https://stash.reaper.fm/theme/1522/De...ReaperThemeZip

========================

Changes in version 4 include:

- new Condensed TCP layout

- new small master MCP layout

- Added meter peak markings and record inputs to nearly all of the MCP layouts

- New small Sidebar/FX rack MCP layout for working with small mixer heights

- Big Meter TCP altered to show a better subset of controls when minimized

- all MCP layouts have improved shrinking behaviour

========================

Default Commala features:

- MCP track folder state indentation, as seen in WT Voodoo

- new TCP Big Meter layouts

- new MCP small Sidebar/FX rack layout

- new MIDI editor pitch colours

- new panners

- extensive coloured fader layouts

- colour swatches are a matched shade to allow easy colour coding

Raghav Yadav - The width knob appears when a track is set to stereo or dual pan mode, by right clicking the panner.

Mabian - the dropbox link provides an old version of the theme, I think Commala 3. This version had the light and dark layouts provided together, but I've since split them up. I'm not sure what you're seeing exactly, with the third point you raised

57JR - Reatune takes it's colour-assignments from the entries for "track background" in the theme development/tweaker window in Reaper. This is an unfortunate overlap of duties because I'd rather not have any difference in track background colour for even or odd tracks, but that would make Reatune completely unreadable. So if you need to see Reatune better, just increase the difference of value between the colour assignments for even and odd tracks.

Hi, I've been tweaking Commala 5.0, is it possible to tweak the theme where i can resize/drag a docked Transport & MCP up to the edge of the upper left toolbar/timeline?

I don't know if anyone will see this thread anymore - but thanks for your themes Commala. I like the dark ones, and I actually prefer the Commala 4 one because a lot of it is editable with the theme tweaker.

I'm very new to Reaper, so I'm just looking for a theme I'm comfortable with - so I can get down and learn my way around Reaper.

I'd use Commala 5, but the colors (especially on the media items) is way too "loud". There must be a way to tone this down, but I haven't found it ;-)

Perhaps at some point I can mix and match some of the features of the ver 4 and ver 5 theme - but for now I think I'm good to go with the Ver 4 dark theme.

If you put these 2 files in the archive where they overwrite the originals, you might like it.

-Treat the "Default_Commala_5.ReaperThemeZip" as a zip archive and open it with whatever zip program you use.

-Browse inside to the "Default_Commala_5_unpacked" folder.

-Drop these 2 .png files in there and let them overwrite the originals.

-Close the zip program. Then start Reaper and you should see the difference.

If you want different colors for the arrange view area (track background etc.), they can be changed in the "theme tweaker" action from the actions list.

Hi James,

Thanks a lot for these!
I don't understand exactly what they're doing, but I guess we're looking at media devices (waveforms) etc - through these, as some kind of filter?

Your files made a big difference. I edited the item_bg.png and made it a little darker (only inside the black outline - as it was weird otherwise) - and it's pretty good now! ;-)

Still a hard choice between this and Commala 4 - but I'll work on some other settings ;-)

Thanks again!

Glad to help!

Those 2 images are just the background images for an "item" (MIDI, audio) in the arrange view. How transparent they are determines how much of the chosen track/item color "gets through". Item info (WAV peaks, MIDI notes) is generally superimposed on top. So you can do whatever you want with the background images as long as you don't mess up something about their formatting or reference areas.

If you want to make the TCP and MCP areas show the track color, you can similarly reduce the opacity in those images "tcp_bg.png", "tcp_bg_sel.png" (selected), and so on (within the outlines as you noticed already with the item background images). If you want to get fancy you can add a gradient and make it semi-transparent for an appearance of depth. Depending on how many TCP/MCP layouts there are for the theme and how many unique TCP/MCP background images are in it, you may have a bunch of PNGs to edit (in different layout folders). Keep in mind what you're doing when editing one file so that you can apply the same change to another; save presets or take notes...or one layout will have the MCP darker than the rest etc.

I've gotten so picky about how I want a theme to look in Reaper that I've edited the Default 5 theme a lot. What's funny about it is that I'm not basing it on how I preferred a previous DAW's looks, which is something I thought I cared about when I started using Reaper. One of the first things I did was try a Cubase theme. In the end I realized it wasn't that I wanted another look in general. It's mostly about the contrast, color depth/tinting, and how visible some of the images are from a distance (I don't want to squint to identify a "button" etc. if I'm not close to my monitor while I'm recording). I like a lot about the Default 5 theme in terms of general spacing, visibility, etc. but just not some aspects of it. It's nice to be able to edit the theme.
