Default Reaper for video editing?

Is there an issue with the latest version of Reaper?

Videos I import, don't play back == only audio, no video.

Really frustrating.

Vegas Pro is much better for video editing. Reaper can open 6 channel Video / audio tracks so you can master them in Reaper then later mux with video in Vegas.

I got the Video no Audio issue recently as I didn't have VLC installed. After a rebuild I had forgotten to reinstall it. Perhaps there is something up along those lines?

Sounds like you need to install VLC.

Downloaded the K lite codecs.

Nope - still a disaster.

You might want to double check that you are using compatible versions of VLC and Reaper. As I understand it, 32 bit Reaper requires 32 bit VLC, 64 bit Reaper requires 64 but VLC.

On the subject of 64-bit VLC--here's where to get it:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Use the drop-down arrow on the right of the button to find "Installer for 64bit version". You might not have dug around enough on VLC's site to find this. Most people are downloading the 32-bit version for Windows without realizing there's a 64-bit version.

hey peter...

could be many things but a simple test is to put a jpeg image on a track and see if it shows up in video window...

if it does, then you might go looking for some prob with the video format..

AFAIK I have not seen a problem with it

Also the "merit" system used by windows can be a real pain if reaper is using DirectShow. (pretty sure it is). The short of it is, a reinstall of VLC would likely fix up any issues there as well. Merit issues that cause loss of video etc are quite common so you might want to try that.

And as several have mentioned make sure you have the appropriate version of VLC. 64 bit for 64 bit Reaper...

Thanks everyone. I did install the 64 bit version of VLC, and now I can see the video, but it freezes, unless I move the video window around (and I let the mouse go, it freezes on the last frame).

Really weird, since I've never had this issue on my main DAW or my other DAW (which both run Windows 7).

I downloaded a demo version of Vegas so I can work with that for the video editing project I'm working on but I work a lot with writing to picture so I'd like to figure out what is going on here.

What happens if you play the video back directly with VLC without reaper?

IMO Vegas is worth having... but that aside
I have win 7 64 bit pro OS
reaper 5.40
no prob's I can see with video... works as expected
I have both VLC 64 bit and fmpeg codecs on hand...

Peter, what is the video format you are using?

It plays back fine ... it also plays back fine with RealPlayer, the standard Windows Media Player, and Apple Quicktime; and it loads up fine in Vegas.

Peter, what is the video format you are using?
Yeah, I like Vegas too ... I had an early version on another computer, and I'm probably going to upgrade to the latest version (14).

The files are MOV files, HD (1920 x 1080), 30 fps, video data rate 11,879 kpbs, total bitrate 12,391 kbps, with 32 kHz / 512 kbps mono audio (it's video from an HD dash cam, model Falcon Zero).

Well just for exerimentation and testing... perhaps you could do a conversion from mov to mp4 or mpeg or avi and see how the video behaves in reaper...

If nothing else, you would eliminate some variables as what and why the problem is about....

I was testing with a wmv and that worked fine... but I've had no problems with avi either

Do you still have VLC 32 bit installed? I'm just guessing, but maybe there is some DLL dependency clash if you have both 32 and 64bit versions of VLC on your machine.

LOL - thanks.

It's not a big deal in this instance, I'm just editing my home videos from Tahoe but it got me a bit worried. I've never had issues with video in Reaper.

I'm starting to do less and less video in vegas and more in REAPER. I know this is an EXTREMELY sore subject since so many of us came from Vegas, due to the perception that Vegas development continually and barbarically ignored the audio side and we don;t want to see that happen in REAPER, but, it may be time for video tracks....

There I said it

now you've done it....

OK so VEGAS is very sweet for video work IMO.... namely with it's ease of having multi video tracks [I know but it's not the same in R] and the wealth of FX, all with pretty logical GUI's...

I'd love to see Reaper go more that way someday... and given Reapers automation lanes I'd think it could quite outshine Vegas by and by...

but not today...

I'm having a similar issue when playing back image sequences, it will play for 30 or so frames then stop while the timeline keeps playing. Videos work fine. Is this some sort of buffer limitation or is it something I can avoid?

For me, the issue was with not having the 64 bit version of VLC installed (see above).

Yeah, that's not my issue, and VLC 64 bit is installed and videos play fine. It is just another step before Reaper to convert to video, so I'm hoping to be able to skip it. Otherwise Hitfilm pretty easily makes MP4s that Reaper likes, so it isn't the end of the world.

I would really like to see that. I would not complain if there were a price increase to a Reaper license either. Within reason

I liked Vegas until my wife started video editing for side jobs. She uses ShotCut which is just as powerful as Vegas, but is more akin to a video editing Reaper. I would rather see Reaper and Shotcut be able to work seamlessly together. At least to be able to call up Shotcut through Reaper like how we do for audio editors.

https://www.shotcut.org/ If any of you want to check it out. It isn't hard on resources either as she is using it to do video editing on a computer in no way was originally set up as a video editing workstation.

Thank you so much for mentioning Shotcut.
Somehow it doesn't work on my Mac.

This is my 2nd animation video made on Windows with
Shotcut, ArtMatic (and Reaper, of course) 😉

Talking about Hitfilm, they just released the free plugin Ignite Express, and I was wondering/hoping that there was some way it could be 'plugged in' to Reaper. Is that in the realm of possible at all?
