Default Overhead Mic

I'd love to know what brand / model overhead mics others use to record their drum kits. We've experimented with different models and placements, but I know we can do a lot better.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,

AKG 451s, I don't even know if you can get them anymore.

just tried out oktava mk 012 multicapsule on OH and they are really good...
btw, I've just purchased yesterday these bullets for less than 50€, shipping included

curious to see what they are capable of, after reading the SOS test by Paul White on sept issue.
a single pair of them with reaper on laptop could laughably sort my band rehearsals recording out, at least

What the hell, why are they so cheap?! As a guy who only has a 57 and a 58, these could seriously expand my capabilities...

My cymbals have never sounded better since I started using a pair of AKG 451s

delivery scheduled by oct 30.. hold on, I'll report them as soon as I can get my friend's studio available (drum and acoustic guitar mostly)

I think these couldn't even remotely compare to akg, but - given the budget - they worth a try

You know this is really going to be dictated by the room you record in as well as the type of sound you are looking for.
The kit is the kit and you already know what it sounds like.

I personally use two setups:
Royer SF-12; softens the cymbals a bit and brings out a bit of mid-range meat in the snare.
AT AE5100 in ORTF; Crisper symbols and thinner snare.

That works for my kit in my room the best of all the mics I have tried. And I've tried alot. That's the point though, it took alot of auditioning to get the two setups I like.

I then usually make a demo pass with both setups to see which I prefer...even if I already have an idea as to which I think will best suit the song. Just to make sure it fills my aesthetic.

Good luck,
David

I just used a combination of (chinese) ribbons in AB and a UM70 in mono (through nice "matching" preamps).
I like, due to the "eight" pattern of the ribbons, to play with their placement. More, or less, room is pretty easy to achieve. And the UM70 is IMO the king of overheads. It's so tight and true to the source, it's unbelievable.
As you can see, I don't really like SDC's for drums. For my taste, they're too fast when recording digital. For 15ips tape, they're perfect though...
