video, no re-encoding
i use virtualdub for basic editing, and one very useful feature it has is 'save old format avi'. this lets me open a video, do some basic editing, and save the result in the original format - no re-encoding. saving is nearly instantaneous. this works well for videos encoded with the camstudio lossless codec (lossless screen captures). to see how this works in virtualdub, check 'direct stream copy' under the 'video' and 'audio' tabs. i've also found that unchecking 'sync to audio' under the 'options' tab is usually a good idea. after those things are set, open a video, make your edits, 'save old format avi'.
why doesn't every video editor have this feature?
