Default Problems with playback of 40 audio-tracks.

I have a problem with playing 40 audio-tracks (24bit stereo each) at the same time. Performance meter doesn't show hi CPU or memory load, but i have glitches etc.

My config^

core 2 duo 1,8 GHz
2 Gb RAM
ESI Juli@ soundcard with ASIO driver

I usually work with MIDI without any problems, so now i'm a bit confused...

Could it be disk i/o? Perhaps you should mess with your buffer sizes.... You're pumping a lot of data right now.

Are your audio tracks on a secondary dedicated (data only) drive???

That's your best bet.... (in fact a 7200rpm drive will handle upwards of 100 tracks.)

Drive C: - OS and apps
Drive D: - Audio and misc data
Drive E: - Sample libraries

Do not use partitioning.
Use dedicated drives.
Dedicated throughput is your goal.

---------------------------------------------------

My XP laptop runs firewire to a Motu828mkII daisy-chained to a Glyph firewire drive for audio files, and I use a Seagate USB2 for sample libraries and video editing.
First thing I do when I test a new DAW is load up 35 stereo 24bit/44.1khz tracks (more than I ever use) and watch the load. Mine runs at 10-15% and I have ZERO problems....

could you maybe adjust some settings for buffer sizes for such task?

C: OS
D: Installed Reaper, vst plugs and audio-files

C and D are dedicated 7200rpm drives

That's my thought. You might also try cranking up the latency if you're done tracking.

I think you should have OS and Reaper on one disc and the data/audio files on the other!

Perhaps you are not using Asynchronous unbuffered in advanced disk i/o settings? It is not on by default, I don't know why. But it gives the best disk performance.

You do not have to put Reaper and VSTs on another drive.

Applications and VSTs get read ONCE when they are initialized. The disk is not hit again while you are working.

You want the audio throughput in and out to be uninterrupted by any OS calls.

C: OS, applications and VST folder
D: Sample libraries
E: - Z: Independent audio and misc data drives

Hi medea, i know someone who had a similar issue recently, and it was related to his video card. The remedy was to lower the graphics cards acceleration settings to operate under "best performance", after this everything was fine strangely enough. Hope this helps.

Anomaly, can you elaborate on this a bit? I've not been into this dialog before, but I now see that I have Read set as Asynchronous (buffered) and Write set as Asynchronous (default). Should I amend these settings?

40 stereo tracks. That's actually 80 tracks right?
What's the sample rate?
How many Plugs?

Even 80 tracks at 44.1/24 can get glitchy on a 1.8 2MB system.
Maybe it's just a matter of setting the buffer higher?

I'm no pro on how computers run but 80 tracks at 24 bits seems like a decent amount.
Are you mixing for Paramount Pictures? :0)

I don't know any technical background but Asynchronous unbuffered seems to give A LOT better disk performance. Actually as I have noticed myself, Asynchronous unbuffered is required if you have a big project. Some while a go Asynchronous unbuffered was the reaper default mode, but then it was changed to Asynchronous buffered.
I'm not sure what are the disadvantages of Asynchronous unbuffered, but probably it might be a bit higher cpu usage compared to Asynchronous buffered. Have you tried it yet if it helps in your case?

I am also experiencing problems with playback - that I did not experience with earlier versions. I have reported this in the bug section as it is not a problem with two other audio apps. Asynchronous unbuffered does not solve this problem for me.
