thunderkick can make crappy bassdrum recordings sound great, and the 50hzkicker will add sustained lowend, if needed.

Try a hard and heavy compression with about 10-15 ms attack to spice it up a bit.

Equalisation and compression will help you get a good kick sound but you have to have a good recording first. Tell us how you are recording it, what equipment, mikes etc you are using and what you think is so rubbish about how it sounds and you will probly get lots of help - there are plenty of engineers here with ideas on how to get good drum sounds.

There is a great video tutorial somewhere as well but I can't think where it is at this moment.

For commercial effects, you can try CamelPhat or the free version CamelCrusher.....

It's amazing what subtle amounts or CamelPhat can do to a wimpy kick drum.

you could also go in and manualy layer a kick that has more of the characteristics you want underneath.

Try moving the mic around first, & see how close you can get it to what you want.

What mic are you using, and where are you putting it?

+1 here. No effect is going to polish a turd.

I hope you're using a kick mic, and definitely try moving it around (or have a helper do it while you monitor it, it's quicker that way.)

+/- 1" can have a huge effect on a drum sound , WORK IT , if you can;t re-do the track then try all of the above !!
Samples laid under the track can help enhance the kik , also comp ++
Remember it needs to sit in the mix too !!

Default help

thanks for the help everyone. what i did was eq to get more 70 - 120 hz. then compressed it a lot, then used the thunderkick which helped the most.

my micing was a AKG D 112 kick mic inside at first but then i decided to add a SM57 on the batter head to get more of the attack and love it.

try making your own subkick bass microphone by wiring a speaker to the hot and cold of an xlr cable. Very easy trick that studio engineers have been using for decades. Use this in conjunction with your normal kick mic. I find this really captures the umph of the kick that is often missing in recordings.
