Chains and Template directories under Reaper
Instead of saving and loading the templates and chains to a user's Application Data menu, could there be an option of saving and loading from a standard subdirectory of the Reaper program directory (eg C:\Program Files\Reaper\FXChains etc.)?

Even better: an option in the prefs where you can set a custom path for (project, track, FX chain) templates.

IMO there is no reason to have these under Application Data. Should default under Program Files/Reaper/FXChains and Program Files/Reaper/Tracktemplates
or at least allow users to switch to those.

I have all my templates under a reaper-templates directory on my project-drive (i.e. outside of any standard Reaper directory).

I do it the same way, under a custom path.

If this request is implemented, it may work under Windows XP or other OS's, but typically Windows Vista kind of protects the user, whether (s)he likes it or not and will place the files elsewhere under the users profile folders such as:
C:\Users profile name\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\FXChains
This btw sucks! Because I may not be able to find it later. But I do agree with you as far as the default is concerned, and with options in preferences to specify another location..

Still craving a "Portable" Reaper, where all the settings, saved FX Chains and Templates are in the Reaper directory. My VSTs are good to go by placing them in the Plugins/FX directory, just wish everything could be under the Reaper folder.
Backing up my DAW is much easier when only having to copy the program directory
instead of having to hunt down the saved templates in the AppData directories.

With optional custom dirs, this is important to me.
And they should be custom, no Application Data junk

Re the "all in one folder" for ease of backup, I just had this funny idea to just turn it upside down and as a test intalled Reaper in a subfolder of it's own application data folder . It seems to work smooth in XP.
Slightly inconventional, admittedly... just as a side note.

Just move the folders where you want them to be

too much unneeded work moving directories and especially navigating out of the App Data folder every single time I want to load a chain or template in Reaper.
Putting Reaper files in the Userdata area seems antiquated to me, I'd wager most of the Reaper user base doesn't have multiple accounts on their DAW to where they would need to lock specific settings (especially templates and chains) to one account.

bad idea, as I just stated. Proper portability is a better one.

ummm, all my fxchains go to the same place... i just moved everything under the program dir, and i put that program dir on my "my documents" drive so every time i reformat, reaper never gets touched.

I was referring to anytime you load or save an fxchain or template in reaper, its explorer dialog always starts at the appdata\reaper\ tree, meaning, you have to navigate, every single time, to wherever else you moved your templates.

My workaround is to add a shortcut in the (oh so painfully distant) default directory that points to my Reaper project folder. This way I'm only one unnecessary click away from where I want things.

Sorry, this complete nonsense to save User Data in (C:\Program Files\Reaper\*).
C:\Program Files\* is by default WRITE PROTECTED by User Account Control Access.
And everyone who deactivated this Windows security feature has now no clue of computer security, sorry absolute NO GO.
UserData has to place in C:\ProgramData\* or D:\Users\NAME\Documents\*

I can't believe this is still unsupported. It is completely wrong and must be so simple to fix.
Reaper is great but this lack of user choice in such an obvious area is shocking.
Sort it out guys

Or being able to change the default resource directory would work for me.
