Cant select midi controller.

I have a template setup for SD2 that I always use but just started messing around with samples of kicks an snares I want to use along with SD2. I want to trigger the samples with my MIDI controller while the already programmed beat is playing so I can click through all the different samples on the fly, hope everyone understands what I'm saying here, lol. So my issue is, when I select my midi controller it does not respond. If I open a new project, open SD2 NOT FROM MY TEMPLATE, select my midi controller, everything works just fine. What the hell is going on, its driving me bat shit crazy...
