Default Tube amp (at 1watt) speaker out to Scarlett18i20 - is it safe?

Is it safe to connect Grandmeister 36 speaker out (power soak set to 1 Watt) directly to Scarlett18i20 line in? It has the Red Box direct box, but there's always a cabinet simulation on - that's disappointing.

I found this from hughes-and-kettner.com (this is in the comment section there):
"The Red Box itself cannot send an unfiltered D.I. signal, but there is an “unofficial” way to get what to want: set the powersoak to 1 watt, then you can connect the speaker out to the line input of your audio interface and you have the pure signal from the poweramp."

I tested it - nothing melted yet . I think it sounds much better than line out (pre-amp signal) -> audio interface -> impulse loader. Turning the master volume past midpoint warms/fattens the signal nicely.

So, I tested this signal path:
Guitar -> Grandmeister 36 input -> Grandmeister 36 speaker out (power soak set to 1 watt) -> Scarlett 18i20 line in -> impulse loader (NadIR/Recabinet 3).

The RedBox out (XLR) is at the speaker out. Have you tried that?

I don't own a Meister, but I do have a RedBox that I'm very happy with on the speaker out of my tube amps.

Just curious why you are using the LINE OUT instead of the RedBox out.

In the integrated RedBox, there's always some filtering going on (there's just a button for different filters - classic/modern speaker). It's not possible to get the "pure" signal out from it, that's why I'm using the speaker out. ("Speaker out -> audio interface line-in" is actually an "unofficial" tip from hughes-and-kettner.com).

Red Box out:

The good thing is that it seems to be just a hi/lo-pass filter - it might be ok to add an impulse response after the RedBox XLR out (to get the "miked cab" -sound):

Red: pure signal from the GM speaker out (1w)
Blue: Red Box XLR out (button set to "modern")

I also tested an impulse response I found from here:
http://hughes-and-kettner.com/products/redbox-5/
(There's a link: RED BOX downloads: Impulse response - it's a zip file with 2 IR files and a pdf file)

The pdf-file from the zip:

The signal path while testing the IR(s):
Red Box XLR out -> audio interface -> NadIR loaded with the IR from the zip file (can't remember which one)

I think it sounded ok - like a cab miked with sm57

Interesting - they also added an IR after the RedBox (already filtered) output. They just boosted the highs a little bit first.

Yeah, the red box out is the sound of a cabnet not a miced cabnet and the impulse they use ( which you can download from their website ) adds the sound of the cab in a room, it makes a lot of difference to the sound in that vid.

Cheers

They actually sound really good live too, a friend of mine loaned me his to use when my amp was at the tech's getting fixed, really easy to hear on stage with the rest of the band.

I seriously thought about getting one but i don't play live enough anymore to justify it.

Cheers
