Anyone have anymore samples of this? I'd like to hear what others have done, as far as pedals or processing.. having a bit of an issue with high gains, sounding a bit flabby...

This is not a video but I just posted the following in another thread here...

I'm using Amplug Lead for my lead guitar parts on the latest song from the new AusDisciples Band album 'Judgement Day'.

'You Are My Saviour' <--- click to listen.
Vocals, acoustic guitars - John Stuppy.
Drums, bass, electric guitar, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano - Dannii.

I used Amplug AC30 on the following song from the same album..

When the Son of Man Comes <--- click to listen
Vocals, finger pick guitar (acoustic and electric), orchestral guitar - John Stuppy
Lead guitar, rhythm guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, drums - Dannii

On both songs:
Lyrics - John Stuppy.
Music - John Stuppy and Dannii.
Recorded and mixed in REAPER at AusDisciples Studio by Dannii.

Default Low Line Level From Amplug

I've read this whole string and am still a bit confused. Should I conclude a DI may help in some ways, but one is not needed to go from the AC30 Amplug headphones jack to an audio interface line in?

Problem is the level coming from the interface to Reaper is very low. I get great volume with headphones, so the Amplug works fine.

I'm forced to use a long cable for recording due to computer and interface locations. Will a DI fix this problem or am I missing something?

Thanks for any help/comments.

How does the Amplug sounds compare to their Tonelab floor models? Looks promising. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Peter - just found this old thread and played your
video in the original post. AWESOME STUFF! That's
a really nice tune... is it buy/downloadable anywhere for
my iPod? On your site, it says "can't buy song"

Thanks Jedi!

That song is from my first solo-album. It¨s not available online. I can send mp3 or wav-file via e-mail. For free of course. This goes for everybody if someone else is also interested PM me here on reaper forum...

Tonelabs are of course much more versitile and have effects etc, but the sounds are in the same "zone"/feel. Same kind of very dynamic feel and response. Tonelabs are awesome. They have tube in the signal chain, but the feel is kind of the same. I like them all. Signal is cleaner with tonelabs. Amplugs hiss little. Not a problem for me. Some "golden ears" might have a problem.

The point of getting amplug is that it´s cheap, lean and mean machine. You can get GREAT sounds for almost zero cash.

Almost everytime after a gig someone comes and asks "hey man! You have a great sound. What amp are you using? I didn¨t see one on the stage." They look stupified when I show my amplug... I just turn everything to ten (it won´t go to eleven) and control the sound with guitars volume & tone. I get cleans and full screams that way...works like a tube amp.

You guys have me interested.

I'm considering buying one, and maybe modding it like this guy, plus putting it in an enclosure more like a stompbox, changing the pots and jacks and so on, so it'll be more sturdy and less portable. I don't have any need (right now) to carry a thing around to practice with, but I'm definitely interested in playing with this thing.

Guitar sounds very good and your voice pure gold!
And the song is very very good
You play chords laid back, thats a little bit disturbig when everything else is mostly accurate.
Also I think the overall sound is a bit aggressive for that arrangement.
But that is only im my most humble opinion and really don't matter much.. You rock!

I got the "Metal" version on ebay this week. It was the cheapest one I saw (I know $40 is not that much anyway, but hey, I'm cheap).

I'm pretty pleased with it so far. The feel of the thing is very cheap, because it's so light and the knobs are so small, but I'm enjoying it.

I saw some talk about how you can't get a "clean" sound with it, even with the gain turned all the way down, but if you aren't just pounding on the strings it sounds as clean as I want it. Hell, you should just play an acoustic if that's what you wanted. They don't need batteries.

I do really want to mod it still to make it feel more substantial, or maybe make some kind of wild thing that fits in an xlr jack on the board and just looks like a 1/4 to xlr adapter.

Really glad I saw this thread. Thanks guys.

I liked it and I just ordered AC30 and the Lead Guitar one.
I have a Crate Vintage Club 30 that love, that has the tone but I can't crank it up, so this will be great.

This isn't specific to the Amplug, but it's because of this that it came about. I went to get a cable or adapter or something since it's a 3.5mm jack, and went with a mono splitter. I recorded some stuff, just goofing around, in stereo and then inverted the phase on one of the tracks. They didn't null around 80hz and 2k.

My thought was that I could use some effects pedals or something on one track, and just straight from the amplug on the other, but now I'm thinking more about the layering and doubling and all that jazz from the other thread. Maybe adding some things to one side to get that slight delay between channels. Same performance, slightly different recording.

Just a "bump" for folks new to the forum.... I simply LOVE
this song (thanks for sending the MP3, btw - it's on my iPod!)

To me, this is the very best song I've ever heard in the REAPER forums...

Just played the video again for my wife and she totally digs this song too.

Thanks again Jedi! Just noticed that Vox has new amplug models on their website and they seem to be available in stores! That "night train" seems very cool. Little bit more gain available than on my trusty ac30 model. Ok audio samples available on vox site.

I just picked up an AC30 Amplug two days ago. I like being able to practice at night without waking up the whole apartment building, but I need help when it comes to recording with it.

The big question to Peter S (btw- GREAT songs!)is how do I get rid of all the unwanted hum and noise this little thing adds into the equation? Your tracks sounded smooth and quiet. I'm also using guitars not really known for their quiet nature at higher volumes thanks to the P90's.

Default my simple observations on amplug noises...

Amplugs have quite high output level, because they were meant for practicing with headphones. Some preamps distort/clip if amplugs output is turned all the way up to 10 (it won´t go to 11). I keep mine at about 8 or use Di-boxes Pad to tame it. It works with most pres. I am no expert on electrics, but these are my experiences.

I have also found out over the years that even if your mixers or soundcards "clip led" tells you that the signal is not distorting/clipping...It still might be clipping and adding funny things to signal. Always use your ears not eyes. ALWAYS. Never trust a led...

Amplugs hiss little. Every amp does. It´s not a problem for me in recordings. I clean up tracks manually always and electric guitar should hiss little. It brings cool "authistic" vibe (joke). It can be annoying problem in live situation though when you play loud. My solution is Boss NS-2 noise suppressor pedal. NS-2 is also handy even when I play a gig with traditional amp setup with overdrive pedals (those bad boys can be noisy as hell). I hate hiss when I play live. I even hate PA´s that hiss. Drives me nuts!

My amplug AC30 hisses most (naturally) when the tone-control is set to the max. My own guitars are quite bright so it won´t happen to me, but I noticed this when I recorded one session with crap chinese made Jackson. It had terrible mics...I mean that thing sounded like a pillow was tucked to my ears. Amplugs tone was at max, but all I got was a brown-sound with hiss...not cool at all...

One more thing. Are your cables ok? Amplugs output uses a small jack cable and you should always use really good quality cables with small plugs. Those cheap "computer-store cables" simply suck! Neutrik is your best friend. Cheap cables/connectors are the worst enemy.

Hope this info helps!

- Peter -

Peter- you're the man. Thanks for the tips and tricks! I think the culprit is my cable. I played again last night with my Casino, and got a great sound- not too much noise or hiss. I think everything is going to work out just fine...

hi all, i just got me a nighttrain Amplug in part thanks to threads like this -

i'm liking the versatility - was afraid it would be 'all gain' but there are plenty of cleanness options and the brigh/thick&more gain option helps too.
its quite dark too which is a nice change from my old prac amp and digital sims.

if anyone wants some little examples (since they've not be around for very long yet) - i can knock up a few bearing in mind i have a squiere bullet strat that isn't going to be fantastic as a source...

Hi Ben, sure, post some examples, does it have a clean sound? I've been curious about these myself. What I'm really looking for is a good ballsy tubish clean sounding "whatever" that can be dealt with later.

Tod,

no problem: with CLEAN in mind, heres a quick rough example clip -

first half is in 'bright'/cleaner mode, then when it gets dirty, thats the thick mode. i kind of do the same thing with both, and switch pickups and do quiet/loud so you can guage whats going on. music it ain't.
the gain is at around 4/10

gets gritty right at the end for a laugh.

theres a send to a bit of room verb and some slight clean levelling (its dynamic so adjust vol as required), thats it. some noise in there i think due to bodgy cabling getting from 3.5 jack to this laptops audio interface...

no prob - imagine how it'd sound if you can play!

with pickup positioning, gain and tone on the instrument, plus gain and 2 modes on the thing itself, you have alot of scope to get something you're after.

i rarely ever used my strat position1/bridge pickup as it was always so offensively quacky/harsh - but through this thing (nighttrain amplug) its actually quite pleasant, so its doing something right.

as of day 1 - i like.

just a mini update -

loving my Nighttrain Amplug! - so much so i fancied a little hardware fx box to just add some variation for practice, and maintain the portable and battery powered theme i've got going.

popped to the 2nd hand shop which coincidentally had an actual vox nighttrain head fro sale which i stared at for a while - then i got an old zoom g1 fx multi-fx for a good price.

amplug is plugged into the output of the zoom and i use its compression/wah/gate/eq/modulation/delay fx etc. as needed prior to getting to the 'amp'plug.

this then goes to a modified practice amp which is basically a full range hi-fi speaker squeezed into the prac amp cabinet.
its so bodgtastic. and sounds good to boot.

not constantly 'ampsim preset-hopping' in front of a computer and having a dynamic responding decent tone on the 'amp', has made me listen much more to my playing, concentrate on the fingers and pickup positions/tone controls to get appropriate sounds. all good!

like a proud 10 yr old heres my little portable/modular setup with the bonus being old expression pedal that was gathering dust plugs in and controls variables in the zoom.

so yet more evidence of the awesomeness of amplugs.

Me: I have got a great amplified electric guitar sound in my headphones and NO noise to annoy everyone else!

Her: I can hear you playing

Me: really?

Her: yes - a sort of clicking sound every time you move your hand (with plectrum init!)

Otherwise a successful experiment.
