Default item volume knob or fader?

Hi guys,

I searched some threads about this topic but I'm not really clear on it.

I was sent a drum track to record guitar over.
The drum track is clipping the entire time.
I don't know if this is the correct way to do it but would the item volume knob be the correct option for lowering the volume on the drum track rather than the fader?
I was under the assumption it was the fader but after reading a thread about an item volume knob being used it kind of confused me.
I did in fact try the item volume knob and it certainly worked

Am I correct in thinking that the faders are only for leveling sounds of all the tracks during the mixing phase and the item volume knob is for lowering the volume to get out of the clip???

Or am I totally off?

Looking to learn

I think you have it right. If the media item is clipping, pull it down at the media item. You can also use the normalize function in the menu which should fix it automatically.

If it is clipping, it is more that likely it is in the initial recording. Dropping the faders isn't going to fix it.

Right. It won't fix the sound for sure.

No, I wouldn't do that, that could compound the problem if the item was recorded too hot.

You had the right idea in the first place, the item knob.

As far as the fader goes, it can be used for most any volume leveling, but the item knob is great for getting the levels in the ball park.
