Suddenly slow, stuttering, distorted playback

this came out of nowhere. stuttering, machine-gun like playback and distorted output. have made no recent changes and am recording with no plug-ins. sounds like a serious buffering or latency issue but i am loathe to make changes when i didn't make changes to make this happen. could this be a hardware issue? or should i just bit the bullet, backup and re-install?

Sometimes this happens when I've got Reatune at work on a track when I try to record.

Not running ANYTHING and its still happening. I tried to uninstall/reinstall but it persists. Oddly enough, even after reinstalling my tracks are all there as well as my audio files...the crappy ones. Weird

Download and run resplendence.com latency monitor and see if it flags anything on your system.
