Reaper - Video - Horsepower
For those that are using Reaper for video, would you be able to comment if you think my system could handle editing 1080p up to 60 fps using Reaper?
Win7 Pro SP1 64-bit
Intel i7 3930K @ 3.20Ghz
64 GB RAM
AMD FirePro W5100
4 GB GDDR5
The OS is on an SSD and the audio/video files are disks in a RAID configuration but can't remember the specific details.
I have used Davinci Resolve but playback in that application is choppy even at frame rates under 30 fps. I was wondering if performance would be better with Reaper or is my current hardware under powered?
Right now I am not doing anything really complex just syncing audio to video, basic "hard" edits, titling but I would like to be able to do some cross fades.
I would appreciate anybody's thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.
-Michael

I think you'll find that system is more than capable of editing 1080p in REAPER. I'm running an i5 from 2012 and that can do it perfectly well. Davinci Resolve is a real resource hog. It won't run on my i5 without bogging down and freezing up. Adobe Premiere runs smooth as silk though and so does REAPER with video.

I forgot to mention that I'm usually editing mp4 H264 format video, 1080p @ 60fps. I'll output from REAPER in MJPEG AVI for further processing in VirtualDub then output from that using UT CODEC (lossless compressed format) and do the final encoding for YouTube using MYFFMPEG back to H264.
I'm also running an SSD (Samsung 850 EVO) and 4GB RAM. This is on a Sony Viao Duo 11 running Windows 10 64 bit.

Thanks ReaDave for your input it is very much appreciated. If I can ask one more question... I was also looking into doing multi-cam shoots. Davinci has a nice facility to drop the multi-cam clips in and it would align all of them and it seemed like the editing between the two is pretty easy.
How easy is it with Reaper?
I saw one of Kenny's videos on Video in Reaper and from that I think I could do two cameras pretty easy but what if there was a 3rd?
I will also read through the user manual tonight.
Thanks again!

with multi-cam you have to manually sync and then it's up to you if you want them on separate tracks or different takes in 1 item.
I've done both ways and there are pros and cons to each.
This one was with each angle on a separate track and muting the angles I don't want to see.

and this one was edited with both camera angles in 1 item as takes.

The problem with the second way is the extra processing and RAM needed for the video processor on each edit. Became a real burden after a while.
Anyway, hope this info helps.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm trying to learn to use DaVinci Resolve, and I've yet to understand how to simply overlay a text on a video. I've inserted the text on a separate track, but Resolve won't display it overlayed on the video, it keeps displaying either the text (on a black background), or the vid, but never one on top of the other. Yet from all the vidz I've seen, it should be automatic. Can someone tell me how to do that ?

Thanks! I remember watching the first link sometime ago. I am re-watching it again. And I'll take a look at the second one as well.

I did this for a crawl at the end of video. I don't have my PC up at the moment but on the text look for an opacity setting / parameter. Or maybe it is the background of the text. But look for something like that and play with it.
