That's lovely, Timothy.
I'm no Bach expert, and I can't hold a candle to you technically, but I would challenge you to play ...maybe a little more rubato. Maybe Bach is supposed to be played straight (I really don't know), but I felt like you could play with more heart/emotion. Maybe a little more dynamic...more feel. ???
And please let me know if I'm off my rocker in terms of Bach/rubato. That may not be appropriate for that time period.
Beautiful playing, though.
Ah! This guy thinks rubato is OK. He's pretty good

Thanks Chris. This isn't one that I feel in a rubato style though I love rubato phrasing generally - and some baroque music defininately is suited to that. This one is a variation on a dance rhythm common in Bach's time, so at its core is the sense of a driving beat. I did put a a lot of feeling into the piece but the fact that it came across to you as straight rather than expressive lets me know that I could say what I'm saying musically with more emphasis, and that's really good to know.

Very nice Timothy.
This led me to look at some of your other vids and I must say I really liked the Danza del Norte -- you looked like you were really enjoying yourself.
Nice one -- thanks for posting.

I understand. And I probably should have used "subtle" or "nuanced" rather than "straight". With that knowledge about the dance piece, I's say "spot on"!

Can't see how you captured the sound, but it sounds amazing. I had some talent for classical guitar back in college, but never had the chops like that. You make it seem so, so easy.

Sorry man, I just can't watch stuff like this... makes me wanna trash my guitars and give up music altogether. I can probably pull off about 3 notes in that fashion.
Excellent playing. Were you recording the audio live in this video? It sounds great but, like Fictional hinted, there are no microphones visible anywhere.

Absolutely beautiful playing, tone and general musicality. I am in awe of your talent, Mr. Lawler.
On one hand, I take tremendous inspiration just from the pure joy of listening to this, but on the other hand, it makes me want to stop playing. I can barely play 6 notes without flubbing something because of my uncoordinated sausage fingers.
Anyway, just brilliant, and thanks for sharing!
PS - Would you be so kind as to share recording details? It sounds fantastic.

Of course, the performance is entirely convincing regardless of exactly how and when it was recorded, it is a great recording of Ac. Gtr, im curious too from the recording tech POV.

Thanks Sambo. Danza del Norte is a great tune... short and intense but best of all it's easy to play, heh!

No bud, you made a good point about connecting with a listener. In fact I have a concert this weekend and I'm playing all the Bach tunes on the youtube page, and I'm intending to do them in a little more extroverted way rather than an understated style as in the vid. Stage voice vs. living room voice, kind of.

Don't say that! You can do things with the guitar I can't. But I think we guitarists are too competitive.

Thank you very much Kindafishy. Leitch guitar made in the 70s. Schoeps mic's, Great River pre. Mic's were 3 ft out in ORTF config, smallish room but high ceiling.

Thanks. In addition to what I already mentioned production-wise, in audio post I used Soniformer for a small amount of dynamics control, a little automated spot EQ for finger squeaks, and ran it through two chained Blockfish limiters doing no gain reduction just because I like how they sound. Verb was done on a compressed send with highs rolled off and very short decay to gel with the small room sound in the tracking.

That whole partita is great. For me the Sarabande is the most challenging as far as really making its phrasing work. Thanks bls.

I do not hear -any- nails or squeaks! Are you using no nails and ProArte LP's by chance?
The playing is great. My only gripe is purely subjective: I'd like to hear more "bite", maybe a slightly longer nail and playing a bit closer to the bridge. But hey, whatever works!

Thanks kmaaj. If my nails were any longer when recording that I would have had to register for a concealed weapons permit, haha! (to be specific, my nails were really long - about 1/8 inch beyond the fingertip, more on pulgar) I agree that I could have had more defined articulation in this. You can never overdo the articulation aspect, I think. Thanks very much for your comments.

Thanks... check out posts 23 and 24.
If you want more info, just let me know.
edit: Ken, I see that you're quite a fine guitar maker. Much respect. Please let me know about any aspect of this recording's production that you're interested in and I'm happy to elaborate. Probably beyond what anyone would want to read, haha.

Fantastic. I love classical guitar. All your videos are great. Will you be putting together an album or something of all this stuff? Because I want it.

Thanks so much shemp. I am planning an album in the next year. I'll let you know. Your post reminds me how great it is that this forum is so open and non-genre divided. Beyond anything else we're all musicians.

Beautiful. I used to have a cd of Christopher Parkington playing bach on guitar, playing it seemed to wash the soul and I got the same effect listening to you.
p.s. do you take requests, Arioso cantata 156 will make a grown man cry.
Beautiful

Very beautiful. Nice even tone. Wonderfully expressive.
Great job! Well done!
Recording details, please.
I remember playing Bach's Minuet in Dm in high school and the choir director saying, "Don't play it with so much feel, Bach did not write it that way, it should be more mechanical/mathmatical."
The accompanist (a beautiful young blond with enormous........talents) turned around and said, "Don't listen to him, you play it any which way you feel, make it your own!"
To this day I always remember her advice. (And her incredible talents!)
