Hi-functionality midi colormap, check it out
Download: https://stash.reaper.fm/browse.php?q=...=th&o=nd&pp=24
I used "Film Grain" in photoshop to get that speckled effect.
Problems with original colormap:
-Selected notes became too bright; could not tell what the original color was / hard to edit
-Adjacent note pitch colors were too similar; could not tell the difference between C and C# for example.

Drybij, do you work with midi a lot? It's a reaper theme file that controls midi note colors.

I've also done my own colourmap, because I use a lot of midi channels and I couldn't tell the difference with the default one.
When selected the notes turn black with the midi channel colour as a border.
Pitch colour just confuses the picture, so I made it all yellow so that I could see the note names clearly. The velocity goes from blue to red.
Its good that Cockos made it themeable for us unbelievers.

I've always wondered what part of the colormap corresponds to what in the piano roll. Zappadave, would you be kind enough to share your colormap and any information learned during it's creation? Thanks.

I think the "noise" maybe functional but it looks really bad in use, imo. I don't reaper's velocity bar either, so I tend to turn that off. It just doesn't look like a single note sometimes, like maybe there are two notes stacked on top of each other... I know that's silly but I just like things to be clean, even if it's less informative it makes my eyes more at ease. I guess I tend to not care too much for the velocity details of the midi note as I like to use other ways to control that (i.e.: expression or volume envelopes)

Can you explain what the noise effect is for?

Ah! Ok - I've worked with midi in Reaper a little, but didn't know about this. Pretty cool!

here's the non-noise version; I actually uploaded it by mistake if you're interested: https://stash.reaper.fm/v/3097/midi_note_colormap.png
I personally like the noise effect, but it's possible that this effect or idea of an effect can be better implemented by someone more creative than myself!

Here are some inkscape files and colourmaps I messed around with while trying to make a midi colour map that suited the way I work. Thanks to White tie for the original guide (link posted above), and to Tedwood for the original Inkscape file that got me started.
https://stash.reaper.fm/3119/Colourmap%20file.zip
My final colour map has just one colour yellow for notes, this may not suit you, but works for me. The final choice, has channel colours that are functional, but work well when selected. I have put in the Reaper theme files in the zip also, just pop it in and try it. Download Inkscape and make your own. Just ungroup the colours, and pick your own colours.
Looks like this.
Colours don't look great due to crappy screen capture. Its looks better in Reaper.
I wanted something that had a classic Reaper Daw look.
There is a bertie bassett cc lane effect, but I'm quite attached to it now.

what the hellz? this is an old useless thread, lol.
Inkscape is best, I think, when it comes to making these png items. I use inkscape to make each part of the png its own object, makes it really easy to keep track of what you're doing. I don't understand Gimp...
Here's mine: midi_note_colormap.svg you can edit to your heart's content with inkscape and create transparent gradient layers to do fades or whatever you want.

How do you show the names of the notes within the midi note? E2, F#4 etc.

search for action list "view: toggle show note names"
and ensure you are zoomed in vertically enough for the note names to appear.

Items and midi notes are not the same thing so they wouldn't share any of the same theme images.

loo sure is not the same thing I never say this. My question is how to use custom color from midi_note_colormap.png to entire project. In this moment I know how to load color notes for each midi item - this is very hard way.

The old way was to replace the image file midi_note_colormap.png in the theme's image folder. We got it good nowadays:
Preferences -> Editing Behavior -> MIDI Editor: "Default note colormap"
(Don't ask me why it's under editing behavior).

Hey, I'm just now joining this thread.
http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...78&postcount=6
the above link you posted (however long ago) about the 'how-to' on making color maps was very helpful, however I don't know if it covers how to make each of the 128 piano-roll notes a different (or specific) color.
What I'm trying to do:
I have reaper controlling my DMX lights, and I'd like to set the note colors by individual track, to make them match the corresponding color signal to the light (red, green, blue, amber, UV, etc). Various light fixtures have different setups and amounts of channels, so I would need to customize the color of each of the 128 notes.
I'm guessing it's the same principal as the velocity mode, where I just have 128 1-pixel color bars in the order that I need them from 0-128?

Not quite. You'll only get 12 different colors which are repeated every octave (color by pitch). Point 8 on the MIDI note colormap How its done picture.
oh, welcome to the forums Tuomas.

well, that's rather convenient since a majority of the lights i'm using are 12 channels! That's perfect, I just need to make a color map i guess.
Thanks for the welcome! I'm sure i'll learn a lot here.
