SM Drums : For Kontakt 5 (New and Improved)
Tod recently notched another milestone in search of virtual drums excellence . The new and improved SM Drums for Kontakt 5 is out now :
https://smmdrums.wordpress.com/2015/...-for-kontakt5/
Why should you care :
- It is ridiculously detailed ( 32 velocity layers, upto eight round robins, multi-mic channels )
- It is fully featured Kontakt instrument with multiple outs to process drum buses externally.
- The new Snare_HyB was created by processing the Snare65_NR so that it had some added snap which can be crucial for some types of music. It has 3 articulations, Snare_HyB1(has the most attack), Snare_HyB2(has a little less attack), and Snare_HyB3(has the least attack).
- Also featured with Snare_HyB, is programmed Velocity Attack and a new EQ tab. The Velocity Attack is selectable and can also be controlled with CC5. The EQ tab is only on the individual nki instrument, SMD_Snare_HyB (Vel-Atk)
More on this later.
- Added an EQ tab to the Toms: A new tab has been added to the individual Toms so that you can EQ each Tom separately.
- Each Tom also has it's own output control before going to the main instrument output. This EQ tab is on the Toms idividual nki instrument only.
- New KeyMap: A new KeyMap has been created to accomodate the new Snare_HyB.
- Better folder structure
- Project Files:New project files have been included to reflect the new Snare_HyB and KeyMap
- It is 100 % free !

Supposedly only if you have a full Kontakt license.
BTW.: is there a good sounding Drum engine that can be used with "Band in a Box" (or other notation-enabling programs) and features Brushes ?

Hi Ivan, is there any way you can get me the Roland keymap?
I'd at least like to check it out and if it's not to difficult I might be able to set it up.

The 'SMDrums_Kontakt_1.0.zip'. Do I need this?
Seems to be included in the other files.

If you're using Kontakt, yes, you'll need that file. It has all the Kontakt nki, nkm, and nkr files in it. Also it has the Resources folder that has all the graphics in it.
EDIT: When you download the "SMDrums_Kontakt_1.0.zip" file, it will contain a folder that's also called "SMDrums_Kontakt_1.0". I recommend that you put that folder where ever you keep your libraries. Then put all the sample folders in that "SMDrums_Kontakt_1.0" folder.

Actually there are Reaper project files for all versions, but they are each in there respective zip files.
Which format are you using msundh, Kontakt or Sforzando?

Okay, you've got the wrong format, "Reaper project demo Sforzando" is only for the Sforzando format.
All the files for Kontakt are here:
https://smmdrums.wordpress.com/category/kontakt/
And I'm sorry but you'll have too download the samples too because Kontakt is set up for individual microphones.
Let me know if you have any problems.

Also Ivan, and anyone else interested, this is the SMDrums KeyMap for Kontakt.
That also shows the kit pieces that are available.

Aah sadly no mschnell, maybe the next SMDrums.
We've discussed it and been throwing around some ideas but there are so many variations when it comes to brushes, especially the variations that are tempo dependent.
If all you need are some fairly simple brushes, Check out this link down closer to the bottom. They are for Kontakt too.

Nice ! But I don't have Kontakt, and even then I am not aware of an easy way to use those with notation written in (e.g.) Band in a Box (supposedly GM-mapping)

Oops I misunderstood.
I had Band In A Box back many years ago, the early 90s to be exact. Even then I thought it was amazing and I'm tempted to get it today.
I'm not sure how BITBx handles this today, there are so many variables that it kind of blows my mind. Do they give you the ability to select VSTis?

Tod, the link on the Kontakt page for the Reaper project files ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8s...ew?usp=sharing ) points to the Sfz Reaper project files...
So, no K5 Reaper track templates or RPP files for Kontakt 5

Nevermind, I've found the link in the original thread here: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=150868
Thanks anyway for the link.
Also, it seems that there are missing samples when loading "SMDrums K5 (Individual Kit Pcs).nkm". There's nowhere to be found 512 sidestick samples.
Their names are like sidestick_top or sidestick_bot, etc...
Good work BTW and awesome new GUI.

Humm, what happens when you load the main kit, "SMDrums Full (Mixer+Editor).nki"? That's got all the same samples.
Actually if it loaded the other samples, it would be strange that the SideSick would be missing?
Are you browsing to the missing samples when that happens. If you get a window related to Kontakt that says something to the affect that it can't find samples, you can just hit the browse button, and browse to where you put the library and samples. From there it should automatically load any missing samples, unless you've somehow separated them.
Check it out and let me know what you come up with.

"SMDrums Full (Mixer+Editor).nki" is ok. It seems that "SMDrums K5 (Individual Kit Pcs).nkm" looks for non existant samples like I said before (07_sidestick_top...). Anyway, I've replaced the missing samples with the old sidestick (8RR) from the previous kit (january). Weird!

Thanks Patrice, that's good to know. I'm not sure what happened to with your individual Kit, it uses the same samples that the full kit does.
At any rate, I'm glad you got it figured out. And incidentally, the SideStick samples should be the same for both old and new.
I do thank you though, and tomorrow I'm going to double check them out to make sure there are no problems. If I do find a discrepancy, I'll let you know.

Great work on this kit and its Kontakt interface. Thanks to all involved for their generosity.
BTW, I can confirm Patrice's experience with the "SMDrums K5 (Individual Kit Pcs).nkm". It fails to find 512 Sidestick samples, browsing to the installation folder doesn't help. Same with "SMD_SideStick (4-RR).nki". All the other .nki's seem fine, as do the multi's.

Aaah, okay, thanks gmgmgm, that verifies that I've got something wrong. It's late so it will be in the morning.
Incidentally, could you guys give me the name of the sample that is missing. All I need is the name of one sample.
EDIT: Oh yeah Patrice, you did mention "07_sidestick_top", that will give me something to work with.

In most cases with BiaB you use "Realdrums". Here BiaB just automatically generates (great) audio for the drum track. But you can't edit this. Sometimes I want to manually edit the drum notes BiaB generates. This is possible, as BiaB _can_ generate a midi track for the drums (AFAIK in GM format). It can be played with the GM player that comes with BiaB. Here Brushes work well, but the sound is not as nice as it maybe could be.

Okay, I found the problem and it was all my fault. Somehow the SMDrums Multi-Mic (Samples).zip ended up with the wrong files.
Here is the correct SMDrums Multi-Mic (Samples).zip link:

Sure Tod - I will scan the page from the manual and get it to you.
P.S. I was more interested in how responsive the kit was with e-drums compared to other vstis and in particular other Kontakt drum instruments.
I will D/l it and have a go.
Will be a few days though as I have a ton of stuff on at present

If I understand correctly, some of these samples are the same as the initial kit but others not?

Okay, that would be great Ivan.
On a side note, I am working on getting it set up so the user can create their on key maps. I've got a pretty good start bit it's going to take a while to get it all together.

Nice, really great work guys.
Roland V-Drums DT-30xx per Default has the same default key-map as DT-20xx
and both need no map, because you can map every pad to every keynote you want -
I mean within the module...
But ok this would be the factory default map for V-Drums DT-30 module
-----------------------------------------------------------
BTW.
you guys could save lots of bandwith, if you would use 7Zip
instead of the,
in my opinion, outdated-relic from Comp. Stone Age ZIP,
compression format.
Just an example with:
SMDrums Multi-Mic (Samples)
919.038.499 Bytes -zip with Zip
639.211.365 Bytes -normal 7z with 7Zip
= ~ -274 MB
SMDrums_Sforzando_1.0
2.409.471.051 Bytes -zip with Zip
1.884.270.140 Bytes -7z with 7Zip
=~ -513 MB
..

I have a TD8 kit - nearest map on that link is the TD10 but as far as I know they are all pretty much the same.
I only have mine in the printed manual at present but will go look onlined for it.

Just downloaded it all, Tod - very busy still the rest of this week but may try it Sunday if I get time.
Interested to see how it stacks up to the Toontrack I have been testing recently.

Thanks ELP, I actually have 7 zip but it's hard for me to use. It don't have any way to start a new zip file and all it shows it the last files I used 7 zip to compress with. It has "delete files" but what does that mean? I don't want to delete the files from my computer.
I've briefly looked at the "Help" but it doesn't give me the answers I need. Consequently I just gave up on it.

Aaah, thank you, it would be fairly easy for me to recreate the Key Maps to fit various mappings, however, I'm nearly done with the coding to give the users the ability to create their own Key Maps. If nothering comes up I could have it done in the next day or two.
