New Reaper song..Your thoughts?
This is mainly an acoustic song, although i have added some electric guitars. There is percussion a steel string acoustic and a nylon acoustic, no bass.
All recorded using Reaper a 2 input Edirol interface and an SE electronics condenser mic.
We also made a video for the track but if you prefer you can listen on the mp3 only link both links are below.
Thanks...would appreciate advice and critism or questions etc.

Really well produced.
Great vocal performances.
The primary thing that sticks in my mind though, is that this is very similar to Foo Fighters "Everlong".
How was this mastered?

Really good vocal performance on this, Jason.
I can hear the Foos influence here too. I think it's fine to wear it on your sleeve. Everything I write sounds like a mashup of the 100's of artists who've influenced me over the years.
From a technical perspective, everything sounds in it's place and the production is good, but the vocals are a little low in the mix (overpowered by the guitars in terms of focus). They are clear, just a little low.

You have a very easy to listen to voice (jealousy rears it's ugly head ), I'd bump it up a bit too.
I thought it was a great tune, FF reference or not.
Great job.
...anyone ever mention you look like Clapton in his Derek and the Domino's days?

Sounds great, nice video. If I haaaad to be picky it would be the "s" @1:30 (slide) and @1:33 (silently) are a little peaky @ about 8k; its almost as if that frequency resonates suddenly. I'm only mentioning them because they caught my attention first listen. Might be the YT conversion for all I know. Nice job.

Hit and run new music and video. (Marketing dupe.)
This may be an unusual thought, but I wonder if people with new music and videos just post up on every DAW on the market and say, "Look, new music with YOUR DAW" and then just hit and run.
Great marketing ploy to get your music and video heard and seen. Not saying it was done here, just that the thought occurred to me.

Very nice!
It's acoustic, but in a way a little hard music.
If you'd want to soften it some, I would have taken down the transients a little on the guitars. But that's taste.
Good voice, well played, good structured/arranged song (I don't miss the bassguitar ), some nice variations.
Cheers!

Its obviously dangerous living in Norfolk.
This is a really nice song -- well produced and recorded.
Although the voice is distinctive, the song as a whole reminds me of the group America from years ago.
Someone mentioned two chords --- one of the nicest songs I ever wrote only had two chords.
Maybe my next one will only have one chord.
Good stuff guys.

Thanks, The second steel string acoustic has its bottom E tuned to D just like in everlong, maybe this is partly why?? I mastered it in Reaper, rendered the track then reloaded it as a seperate project then I compressed a little, pushed the volume up to just over clipping, and eq'd a little.

Thats cool, I get the vocals commect too low a lot, I guess mixing your own vocals is tough, I have a tendancy to hide them sometimes.

Mastered in Reaper? What program, software or VST were used? Thanks.
I must say, you have done an excellent job with this tune. The production is top notch. Everything seems perfectly placed as far as I am concerned. Love the handclaps, nice touch.
Love it. Well done.

Thanks for that..
I guess its a poor mans mastering but this is what I do/did.
I load the rendered wav of the project into Reaper, then cut the start and end how I want it.
I then make some Eq adjustments using the Cockos EQ to be honest usually adding some top end. I then add some saturation there are again many free ones about. I use this to rough up the track a little, i think it makes it sound slightly less bedroomy and digital.
I add some slight compression (stillwells do some good free to try ones! or the Reacomp included) I ease the volume up to around 0db on the master track.. sometimes Ill go back and correct any instruments that are making the track peak in just one or two places. Sometimes I use the Reaper JS:utility volume or/and the compensation on the compressor I'm using to achieve maximum volume without peaking.
Ocassionally Ill fiddle about with an Exciter (again a reaper one or a freebie) maybe stereo width or stereo enhancer (all included with reaper) but not very often.
Any help??
This is what i do , bet you a pound its all very incorrect but I just fiddle as i go along!!

There is no such thing as "incorrect" (or "correct", for that matter). There is only "Sounds Great"!
Especially, there is: Feels and Sounds Great to me!

Really very fine work - writing, arranging, execution, and production! Is your room treated?

I agree, if it sounds good its right!! much like my guitar playing, its right for me but I'd make a rubbish teacher!! I just didnt wanna pass on any bad techniques!

Thanks so much for that, no my room is'nt treated but its a multi-functional room so it full of stuff, shelves, books, wardrobes etc, so I guess this all helps???

I've been singing in bands since i was 18 or so, Im now 34. I don't feel Im a natural singer, it come hard to me and I have to sometimes think carefully about the notes. I think I sing better in my band, when theres a lot of noise and its fun. When I record i struggle to loosen up, I usually turn the lights out and knock back a few whiskeys.. I record the vocals no less than 4 times, sometimes 6. Usually by the 3 rd take its sounding good. Then I take the best bits from the takes. Because of this technique (which I understand is fairly standard) I do not need much prosessing (IE tuning) I would hope each phrase has at least one good take!!!
Ocassionaly if i really like one of the takes because i sang it in an odd, exciting way compared to the rest but its slightly flat, i would tune it using a tuner.
I once saw a robbie williams clip and his enigineer was making him sing this 2 word phrase over and over again, to get the best take. I also heard Lilly Allen has her vocals layered up to 12 times!!! Im not sure about all that fuss.
But I do think multiple takes makes for a good final vocal .

If you zoom in on a guitar waveform, when you hit a note, you'll see some big peaks right in the attack. That's transients. You can take them down with a very fast compressor, like attack 0.1-0.2ms.
Or, when recording, you can choose mics/preamps with slower transient-response. Smooths things out a little.

Or, you can slice to the right and left of the transient and grab the gain handle of the new individual item, and pull it down.

I'm sure that happens but in this case, the OP has been here for a couple of years and has 100 posts under his belt. Most likely not a hit and run.
