Armed note insert in the Midi Editor
Let's try this
http://img831.**************/img831/8...noteinsert.gif
So I'm working on a midi ed toolbar that let's you pick a note duration... [1/4, 1/4 dotted, etc] and by arming that icon in the toolbar you can just click that kind of note where you like on the grid...
Works sorta OK so far, EXCEPT for this horrilbe 'flash bulb' effect ... way to nasty on the eyes
Now just clk'ing in notes when not armed don't do that 'flash bulb'...
So, DEV's... does it really have to flash like that?

can anyone plz confirm or deny this 'flash' ???
Is it just me and my system or is it true on all reaper installs.
If you need more info, just ask.

confirmed with the action "Insert note: 1/16" used in the Piano roll toolbar, armed for the left mouse button.

Mine doesn't flash white specifically, but all of Reaper "blinks" for a split second. Or I guess it flashes black. I'm on XP32 SP3, the latest pre. I have dual monitors set to 1920 x 1080 with Reaper spread across both.

Thank you both...
fyi, I'm on dual mon's also set to 1920 by 1200 and XP SP2 1/2 [a tweaked SP2 that accepts most things requiring SP3 ]
At least I now know this extremely irritating visual event is not just me or 'my system'...
My 'big mac pro buddy' will be back home on sunday and he can also test on that machine...
So look, I'm not a very bright programmer, etc. Just a manipulator of reapers customization abilities...
I fully realize in the Midi Ed, that we can use the drop down menues to set the grid and the note values and then clk in notes...
However, I really find drop down menues really tedious compared with arming an icon and then clk'ing in notes. You see?
...and that method, along with this custom toolbar for the ME works great... EXCEPT for the flash or flicker... which makes it a 'sharp stick in the eye' very quickly.
So the question becomes, "Can this be fixed to NOT flash or flicker so badly?" It seems like it's a coding thing but what do I really know...

I totally forgot to check my MacBook Pro. Sorry about that. 4 yo Macbook Pro 15", 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, brand new HD 500 Gb, OS 10.7.3 Reaper 4.22 32-bit. No flashing whatsoever. Totally clean, albeit slightly delayed when creating new notes. This is my first time launching Reaper since I replaced the system drive and upgrade to Lion, so I don't know what to expect from Reaper on here, but there is no flashing of any kind.

Thanks Chris and Viente... darn... so some of us do get it and some do not get it... so starting to think it may well be dependent on the system and hardware... [oh krap!]
Hard to request a fix when I'm not sure exactly what causes the problem.... ummm... maybe it's only on 32 bit reaper? I'm assuming that on the Mac and Win7 you guys are using 64 bit???

WinXP Pro SP3 32-bit here, no flashing. Tried the menu insert, insert from the custom toolbar button(s) and painting with mouse. Several different values & with different themes.
Only flash I get is when the MIDI editor window opens.
---
edit:
Seems I missed the way to get these flashes. See below, thanks Gofer.
So confirmed here too.

Reason: further testing to try the missed step and revealing the light show

Xpander, you didn't say you tried with an armed mouse button, the glitch happens only when I
- create a toolbar button with the insert note action
- right click the toolbar button to arm it for mouse click
- click with the mouse (in the note's area) so the action gets performed
=> quick redraw glitch (like Chris describes it, it's more of a "blink" for me as well)

ya think it is something the DEV's can smooth out with some diff redraw code?

Very unhelpful comment alert
(grin) been using a button for this and things like dotted notes, ties in the stave editor and triplets for at least 20 years in Bars n Pipes Pro.
BUT we do appear to be getting there at last!
Courage - In the light of all the confirms I am not even going to bother trying this but will be very happy as and when it is fixed and I can profit!
