Can Reaper deal with multi-channel wave files (more than two channels)?
I have an 8-channel interleaved wave file. When importing it onto a track in Reaper, the program definitely recognizes that it has 8 channels, and shows meters for each one. However, I only hear the first two out of the 8 - it's taking channels 1 and 2 and hard panning them left and right, as it does for stereo files. Is there a way to have all 8 play at once? If so, can I also selectively play channels (for example, only playing channels 3 and 4 out of the 8)?
Thanks!

Sounds like its playing in 'stereo'... check your routing, you probably need some more outs.

Try out the following action as well as ^:
"Item: Explode multichannel audio or MIDI to new one-channel items"
It will render new files for each channel (appending "[channel #]" to each filename), then stick them all in a folder track, so you have max flexibility.

Cool, that works, thanks. Out of curiosity...is there any routing options that would allow me to play more than the first two tracks? Here's what I see with the routing dialog (attached)

Send each stereo pair other than 1-2 (3-4;5-6;7-8) to a different stero track.
In the send section you can select wich channel goes to wich track.

The Master channel is (typically) a stereo channel. So unless you down-mix your 8 channel file to stereo, you won't hear it through the master buss. There are some excellent utility plug-ins in the JS folder, including:
JS: IX/Mixer_8xM-1xS
This should down-mix you to stereo. Insert it on that track that contains the 8 channel interleave file.

Did you want it as an eight-way output (eg 7.1) using 8 outputs on your interface?
If you want to hear it through stereo monitors, you'll have to downmix it to stereo some way or other

if you have an 8-channel I/O with ASIO this is cake.
Just set the master track to be 8-channel and make sure your ASIO settings in Reaper are for outs 1-8. Of course you also need 8 speakers to play it back on.
Sounds like you have typical stereo monitors though. You could do the routing recommendations above, and then adjust the send parameters so that only the desired pair of tracks appears on the master at one time. would be pretty hard to mix surround this way.
As for rendering out an 8 channel file, see my signature feature request. Reaper has a missing feature that would really help.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm just looking to audition the multi-channel files. Thanks!

no render needed since sws coded these:

*btw Reaper has/had 128 native "set take channels to.." actions - but heh, i think thats sort of an overkill.

Wait... don't you simply set the 'track channels' to 6 (for 5.1) or 8 (for 7.1)? Then direct them to the appropriate outputs on your interface?
What I don't understand is the lack of 'built-in' joystick panners for surround. This is apparently contrary to Reaper's style? I imagine this is consistent with Reaper's 'build your own features' nuts and bolts style... Anyone want to explain how this lets me be more flexible? I'm missing it.
