Default auto punch in to record an entire song?

Hi guys,

Curious as to what other's do and if doing it this way is odd.

I was working a guitar idea ( just a spontaneous idea) and decided to make a song out of it so I punched in time selection (At the start) and punched out to where I assumed the song would end, about 4 minute mark and just came up with verses, choruses.. ect punching in every time I came up with a new part.

I mean, it works for me but just curious if this is an oddball way of doing it.
I also can't help to think this might be a silly question but I'm really curious

Try laying down a rough guide track. Then make regions labelled verse1, verse2, bridge, chorus1 etc. Then Punch a few regions at a time.

I do that if I havent' figured everything out yet.

Reaper's take management system sucks, which is really the only drawback to that process. I end up with 15 takes, 10 of which I want something from. It gets to be a mess.

Reapers take system is confusing but once you have figured it out it works very well. There are a number of ways it can be improved but in it's current state it can be a very useful take system imo. If you have not read my takes documents you might find them useful.

Also, here are a few actions that I use.

Apply this after you have a time selection and this will give you pre-roll and post-roll for context during looping into and out of the punch.
Custom: Takes: Set Loop punch in / out
Options: Unset loop points linked to time selection
Record: Set record mode to time selection auto-punch
SWS: Set transport repeat state
Go to end of loop
Move edit cursor forward one measure (no seek)
Move edit cursor forward one measure (no seek)
Loop points: Set end point
Go to start of loop
Move edit cursor back one measure (no seek)
Move edit cursor back one measure (no seek)
Move edit cursor back one measure (no seek)
Loop points: Set start point

During live recording, hit a key associated with this and you are starting the track over.
Custom: Redo Recording
Transport: Play/stop
Edit: Undo
Transport: Record

Allows to only punch in and never out.
Custom: Punch In Only
SWS/S&M: Copy selected tracks (with routing)
Item: Paste items/tracks
Script: EXT - Insert marker at to start recording.lua
Item: Select all items on selected tracks in current time selection
SWS: Delete all items on selected track(s)

That's what I usually do but without the regions.
I would record a verse on one track, a chorus on another and so on and so on.
Then when I felt comfortable enough and practiced I would try and record it straight through.

Admittingly I just started learning and trying punching in and out and it seems very convenient

I will try it with regions

Yes, works well when an idea just hits you and you don't anything figured out
As far as the take system I haven't gotten my feet wet so but will look in to it the more I learn
