Default VST Plugins default installation

I am attempting to get started with plugins. I am trying to find a tutorial that addresses just downloading a plug in and successfully installing it.

It seems the tutorials I am finding talk about plugin, after they have been installed.

They vary quite a lot with regard to what exactly needs to go where, but fortunately most come with installation instructions. Often they download as zip files and need unzipping into a VST plugins folder. That can be wherever you like so long as you tell Reaper where it is (Options/Preferences/Plugins/VST and fill in the path field).

If you have some specific examples you want to use it might be easier to help.

Not sure how far along you are with it but, after you download the VST plugin the first thing you have to do is find the file. It'll look like what slipstick said above and it will appear in a window during the first download page or two, during the download. Once the download is complete navigate to that file (Options/Preferences/Plugins/VST). Open the VST file and look for the file ending in "dll." Now open Reaper and go to "Options" then "Preferences". On the left side of the window, go to "Plugins" then "VST" You'll see a tab that says "Add", click it. It will then list a page showing all your files. At this point you need to find the VST file containing your download, ending in "dll". That is your VST plugin. Click it then click "OK" at the bottom of the window. That should do it. Let us know if it works.
